Waterpark Tips and Tactics

August 15, 2012

Lots of people credit Wisconsin Dells with inventing the waterpark craze, which makes the owners here the go-to source for advice on what to pack for your waterpark getaway and what to leave at home. Most important, though, are the safety guidelines. Read up on those under the “How to Waterpark” section.

What To Pack:

  • Two sets of car keys. Can you guess the most frequently misplaced item at the waterparks?
  • Comfortable swimming suit.
  • Aqua socks to protect your feet while walking and sliding.
  • A big, thirsty beach towel. Some resorts supply towels, so ask in advance.
  • Waterproof sunscreen.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Quarters to feed the lockers where you’ll stow the stuff you don’t want to get wet.
  • Waterproof camera.
  • Waterproof bag for your cell phone, iPod and other tech goodies.
  • Clothes for the ride home if you’re making it a day trip.

What to Leave at Home:

  • Valuables, especially jewelry. Whoosing down a funnel ride and jewelry simply do not mix.
  • Glass containers of any sort.
  • Inhibitions - everyone’s a kid again at the waterparks!

How To Waterpark:

  • Rules of the playground apply: No cutting in line, no pushing, no shoving, follow the directions of the duty person (in this case the lifeguards).
  • Watch where you’re running - better yet, no running.
  • Keep an eye out for little ones splashing in the water.
  • Speaking of little ones, swim diapers are required.
  • Know your limits, especially if you don’t know how to swim. When you enter the park, ask for a life jacket. Children under a certain height may be required to wear a life jacket.
  • Read all the precaution signs posted at the rides and slides.
  • Arrange a meeting spot and time to check in with the rest of your group.
