Wisconsin Dells makes no secret of the fact that it's gaining popularity among grown-ups traveling without kids, yet it's still a surprise to many that you don't need kids to have a good time here. Fall seems to be the sweet spot for guys and girls getaways. Must be the gorgeous fall colors, the crisp fresh air, the bounty of the season, the slowed-down pace. Or maybe it's the waterparks. Here are five itineraries that groups of friends should be ga-ga for in the fall.
Autumn is one of the best times to visit Wisconsin because of the gorgeous fall colors, and Wisconsin Dells delivers. Stroll the ¼-mile downtown Scenic River Walk with vistas of the Wisconsin River and its sandstone bluffs now easily accessible to the public for the first time in 75 years. Rent at kayak at Mirror Lake State Park: Boat & Kayak Rental and paddle into the cool narrow waterways to see shady sandstone cliffs and the canopies of trees.
There are three state parks in the area, Devil’s Lake State Park, Mirror Lake State Park, and Rocky Arbor State Park, and all three are guaranteed to give a splendid display once those trees start turning. In the process you’ll get in some fresh air and exercise.
Another way to take in the fall colors? On horseback. Check out Canyon Creek Riding Stables, Red Ridge Ranch Riding Stable or Woodside Ranch for tours and times.
Tours and Tastings
Tours and tastings in the area are growing to match the demand and interests of our visitors. For microbrews, check out Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co. Their Kilbourn Hop Ale pays tribute to the history of hops in the area. Port Huron Brewing Company features a charming tasting room with plenty of brews on tap to try, including their best seller, Honey Blonde, brewed with pure Wisconsin honey. Sprecher’s Restaurant & Pub of Wisconsin Dells features favorite brews like the Mai Bock, but you can also grab one of their delicious gourmet sodas.
Wollersheim Winery in nearby Prairie du Sac has been racking up the awards, recently winning Small Winery of the Year from the Riverside International Wine Competition. The European-style setting never fails to charm visitors. Try their signature wine, Prairie Fume. Out at Fawn Creek Winery, the vibe is relaxing. Several small decks feel cozy tucked away in the pines and the vineyard is close by for a convenient stroll. The wine slushes come highly recommended. Baraboo Bluff Winery is the newest addition to the area and features incredible views of the bluffs and rolling farm fields in Baraboo. Bring a blanket and take a seat on the lawn.
Two distilleries are now open too. Driftless Glen Distillery offers tours and tastings with catchy names such as Navy Strength Gin. The restaurant is highly recommended too, and they make an extra effort to keep things local. Wollersheim Winery also opened the Wollersheim Distillery in August of 2015. Winemaker Philippe Coquard set a new standard with his Coquard Brandy. Salute!
Plenty of our guests want a little me time. Understandable. Put yourself first with a relaxing night at Sundara Inn & Spa. Swim in the heated infinity pool, walk the mediation trail and finish up with a massage. There are wonderful day spas in the area, including great views at Rhapsody Spa on Lake Delton. Several of the spas offer couples massages too, so you can unwind together or solo.
Try a Lavender Tranquility body treatment at Spa Kalahari & Salon, an Organic Indulgence Facial at Elements Spa Salon at Great Wolf Lodge, a Pink Signature Pedicure at Spa Del Sol and Pink Nail Bar at Chula Vista Resort or a Warm Buttered Stone Massage at Spa Serenity.
No need to travel to the rainforests of Costa Rica when you have three zipline courses right in the area. BigFoot Zipline Tours opened their newest lined dubbed ZipZilla just this past year. Zip through the tree tops high above a canyon at the Wilderness Canyon Zip Line Canopy Tour. Chimney Rock Park Zip Line Tour – Vertical Illusions course has views that go on for 120 miles.
If you are the competitive type, sign up for a game of bowling or putt around on a mini-golf course. Or act like a big kid and get your game on in the dodgeball arena at Knuckleheads Trampoline Park ● Rides ● Bowling.
We know that 25% of our visitors come to Wisconsin Dells without kids, and we are pretty sure they like to spend time in the water too. Luckily, the advent of the indoor waterpark has weather-proofed our water fun so even if it’s chilly you can relish the warmth under the roof. Cabana rentals are a great way to kick back with friends by the pool or lazy river. Food and drinks are typically delivered while you lounge in your chair. Or challenge the group to a race on the indoor mat racer slides. Don’t forget the adult-only swim up bars: Margarita’s Swim-Up Bar at Wilderness Resort and Mud Hut Swim-Up Bar at Kalahari Resort Waterparks. Plenty of resorts have luxurious pools and hot tubs for relaxation too. Check out Baker’s Sunset Bay Resort on Lake Delton where they recently switched to a saline swimming pool.
