50th Anniversary for Classic Race Track

Most of us get ornery around the time of our 50th birthday, facing middle age and all. But the crew over at the Dells Raceway Park is gearing up for a summer of festivities to mark their golden anniversary. We caught up with Special Events Manager Julia Luther to get her take on how she keeps this classic fresh.

    Q. To get ready for your 50th anniversary year, what changes did you make?
    A. The owners, all three avid racing fans by the way, wanted to bring back the experience of racing at this track when it was in its prime, while adding some modern amenities. They built a new corporate pavilion, added a VIP lounge, and made major improvements to the concession area. The track was in great condition, so that stayed.

    Q. What famous racers have been at the track?
    A. One of the biggest events was one hosted by the Matt Kenseth fan club last summer. Fans got to enter their names in a drawing for the chance to take a few laps around the track with Matt. The winners had a blast. Matt’s teenage son Ross is a short track racer and he raced throughout the season here as well. On NASCAR Night, we welcomed Scott Wimmer, Chris Wimmer, Johnny Sauter, Tim Sauter, Travis Kvapil and Erik Darnell.

    Q. Do you see a lot of families in the stands?
    A. Racing is a very family-oriented sport, and they make up a good 50% of our fan base. Some of our most successful nights were themed to families with children. We had a Kids Night with autograph sessions, and a Bike Night during which we raffled off more than 150 bicycles to children. The bikes were donated by racers and area businesses, and there were some very deserving kids in the crowd that night.

    Q. What do you like best about the crowds in Wisconsin Dells?
    A. Seeing the kids really get into it, and the excitement on their faces. That’s what makes it fun for the whole team here.
