    Who's Most Coachable?

Take a woman who knows how to swing a tennis racquet, but has never picked up a golf club in her life, and you have the makings for the quintessential "beginner's" golf lesson. A number of golf courses in the area, including Wild Rock Golf Club and Trappers Turn Golf Club, now have golf academies, the perfect camp for aspiring juniors and anyone else who wants to improve their game. But for someone who doesn't know the first thing about clubs, reading the greens, scorecards, carts or golf etiquette, even a beginner's lesson seemed a leap of faith. It turned out to be a good leap at The Kalahari Golf Academy at Trappers Turn. Waiting for me when I arrived at Trappers Turn was Jason Manke, Director of Instruction. He reassured me we would just be getting a feel for basic technique. Big sigh of relief. Manke explained that they offer everything from a half-hour lesson to a full five-day course. Their golf academy runs year-round, moving indoors to the Kalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center during the off season where Manke sets up golf simulators. You can imagine what a hit that is with corporate groups. Back to my swing. We spent our time on a practice green, away from the eyes of experienced golfers. Manke was patient and motivating, congratulating me on successfully lofting the ball each time, except for that one I missed entirely. Our conversation veered from technique to the make-up of his classes. Interestingly, while less than 20% of their tee times go to women, nearly 70% of the adult participants in their golf lessons are women. I was entertained by his analysis. "Women are more willing to process direction and accept constructive criticism." So true. Here are two quick tips from Manke for all of you coachable beginners out there.

    • Develop a consistent set-up, ball position and grip. Making tiny changes at that point leads to quick improvement.
    • Visualize a baseball or softball swing, tilted over at the hips so the club travels on an arc near the ground. Then, couple that with all your weight ending up on your front foot, your belly-button pointed to the target and your rear toe pointed straight to the ground. There, you've learned the basic golf swing.

Jason Manke was honored as the 2008 "Teacher of the Year" by the Golf Course Owners of Wisconsin and he's a finalist for the 2009 "Teacher of the Year" award from the Wisconsin PGA. View all Wisconsin Dells Golf Courses.

Could This Be The Next French Riviera?2010-04-01Wisconsin Dells has an alter ego and it's all about luxury, glamour, glitz and pamperingRead More
Could This Be The Next French Riviera?

There's no denying the Dells is "kid central." Families, extended families, family reunion groups, groups of friends with children in tow -- you get the picture -- have made the Dells their preferred vacation hangout. So could the rumblings be true, that Wisconsin Dells has an alter ego that is high-end and geared towards grown-ups? Here's how the evidence stacks up.

    Luxury Wisconsin Dells Resorts

    Luxury Digs

Sure, the water park resorts are grand, but try a golf villa at Chula Vista Resort or a private adults-only spa villa at Sundara Inn & Spa, and you'll know you've arrived. These are so sophisticated and so richly appointed, you probably won't want to leave.

Wollersheim Winery - Dells Area WineriesFINE WINE

Not everyone can afford to hop a plane to Italy, or France, or Napa Valley for that matter to indulge their taste for fine wine. But certainly a trip to Prairie du Sac, just a half-hour drive from the Dells, should be manageable. There you'll find the Wollersheim Winery in all its historic splendor. Originally established in the 1840s by Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy no less, and nestled in the hills overlooking the Wisconsin River valley, this property features buildings with incredible character, outdoor seating with views to the vineyard, lovely gardens and a new tasting room. There's a new winery in Wisconsin Dells too - it's called Fawn Creek Winery. Or, if you prefer your wine served with a fine meal, ask to see the wine list at Field's at the Wilderness or the Del-Bar. Both restaurants in Wisconsin Dells were designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, and both have graced the pages of Wine Spectator Magazine.

Wisconsin Dells Spas - Spa SerenityIndulgent Spa Services

Celebrities insist on it and so must you. It's a spa service to soothe those jangled nerves and make your skin glow. At Spa Serenity (don't you just love the name!), go for the "A Night Out Facial." At Sundara Inn & Spa, the Slimming Body Wrap and Bath Salt treatment seems like something a starlet would have before walking the red carpet. Even if you're vacationing at Wisconsin Dells water park hotels like Chula Vista, the Wilderness or Kalahari, sneak away to their on-site spa for a little pampering that's good for you.

Alpha Beta Karma - Wisconsin DellsDesigner Shopping

Fashionistas never eschew style simply because they're on vacation.  In fact, it's quite the contrary - they're on the look-out for on-trend finds they won't find closer to home.  The Wisconsin Dells shopping itinerary for any self-respecting fashionista must include stops at Artistic Expressions Gift Gallery for artisan jewelry and textiles, Affordable Leather and More for a new handbag, Alpha Beta Karma for designer fashion straight from east and west coast designers and Cranberry Connections for scarves and totes to complete the outfit.

    Dells Golf CoursesChampionship Golf

It's almost unimaginable that a community of just 20 square miles could have three championship golf courses. Yet, it does. Reserve a tee time at Wild Rock Golf Club, Trappers Turn Golf Club, Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort or all three and then golf to your heart's content.

Fall in the Dells - What’s Not to Love?! 2012-08-13We say “Wisconsin Dells,” you say “kids.” Not so fast. While this resort community known as “The Waterpark Capital of the World!®” was ranked the #1 family vacation destination in the U.S. in the 2010 TripAdvisor.com Travelers’ Choice survey, the Dells is continuing to gain a grown-up following in the fall at a pace that even has the locals pleasantly surprised.Read More
Fall in the Dells - What’s Not to Love?!

Golf 1There’s a reason adults love fall season in the Dells - ok, there’s more than just one reason. Wisconsin Dells makes no secret of the fact that we are growing in popularity amongst adults traveling without kids. Fall seems to be a sweet spot for guys and girls getaways. Must be the gorgeous fall colors, the crisp fresh air, the bounty of the season, the slowed down pace. Or maybe it’s the indoor waterparks? Let’s explore some of the reasons that have adults and groups of friends going ga-ga for in the fall.

    1. Golf’s the Game: Round up those friends who will make your golf game look better and hit the links at one of the area’s three championship courses - Wild Rock Golf Club, Trappers Turn Golf Club and Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort. There are also a handful of fine executive courses to choose from for a quick afternoon round. Golf villas and spacious condominiums around the Dells area allow you ample space to celebrate afterwards. Or, if you’re a non-golfer, throw down the gauntlet at a mini-golf course, like Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf or Timber Falls Adventure Park; there are plenty of options to choose from.
    2. Spa and Shop: Those three little words will light a fire under any group of girlfriends who’ve been trying forever to coordinate schedules. This itinerary also presents a nice twist for a bachelorette party. There are day spas, spas at the waterpark resorts, an overnight destination spa and even a trip to one of the lakeside Wisconsin Dells resorts with a spa. Shop the cute gift selection at Cranberry Connections on one end of town, then head downtown for boutique apparel shopping at Alpha Beta Karma and jewelry shopping at Winnebago Fine Goods & Gift Shop to name just a few shopping options this fall in the Dells.
    3. Munch a Bunch: For discerning palates, plan a Wisconsin Dells vacation built around food and beverage finds. There are quintessential Wisconsin supper clubs, a vegetarian restaurant with ethnic fare, tasty fish fry joints, confectionaries, two wineries, two microbrew restaurants and the list goes on and on. Stay at an area B&B and enjoy a gourmet breakfast.
    4. Hit the Outdoors: For outdoorsy types, pack comfortable shoes and warm clothes for zip lining at one of the three zip line tours in town, kayaking and canoeing the Wisconsin River, Lake Delton or Mirror Lake and hiking at one of the three nearby state parks. Staying with this theme, try Wisconsin Dells camping. The Dells has some 3,200 campsites in all, from rustic tent camping to “glamping” (glamour camping).
    5. Fall Festivals: Fall could rightly be called Festival Season in the Dells. We have harvest fests, community fests, Halloween fests, food fests, even a festival dedicated to cranes. If you need a little nudge to get in a festive state of mind, we’re just the place to make that happen. It seems Wisconsin Dells has a fall festival or event to suit any fancy. So plan your visit around our calendar of events, or add an event to your itinerary once you arrive.
    6. World Waterpark Capital: You didn’t think we’d leave out the waterparks in Wisconsin Dells, did you? Grown-ups like to take in the waterparks too, especially when a luxury poolside cabana and adventurous rides and slides are involved. Lodging options are as varied as the indoor waterparks themselves, with oversized condos a great choice to keep the group together.

    Destination Wedding

    Here Comes the Bride

You could feel the waves of nervous energy in the room, and we do mean feel. Bridesmaids were fussing with their hair. The little flower girls were admiring themselves as they twirled in front of the large mirror. The mother of the bride was sorting through the corsages and boutonnieres.  And the bride was relishing this special moment that would be the prelude to her promenade down the aisle. In just a few moments, Sarah Eberle of Wisconsin would wed Sean Sweeney, a Wisconsin transplant from Phoenix, in front of family and friends who had come in from all over the country to be part of the happy occasion.

While a one-of-a-kind moment for the wedding couple, this is the kind of scene that plays out hundreds of times a year. Glacier Canyon Lodge, part of the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort vacation compound, and the other special event venues in the Dells. The destination wedding business at the Wilderness Resort is a thing of beauty for brides and grooms, thanks to a picture-perfect setting for outside ceremonies (adjacent to their championship golf course) and a ballroom tailor-made for sit-down dining, wedding toasts, cutting the cake and dancing the first dance.

The Wisconsin Dells resort's wedding event planner Jennifer Akers, who met us at the entrance to the ballroom, was a consummate pro at exuding calm while taking care of details before the bride even realized there were details that needed addressing. Jennifer was outside straightening the white chairs along the grassy aisle, then back inside making sure the table centerpieces were just so.

The ceremony was lovely - the mother of the groom even sang - and under warm blue skies Sarah and Sean exchanged their "I do's." Then the bridal party was whisked away for photos at a scenic little spot on the shores of Lake Delton. The reception followed and it was just as nice as the ceremony. Guests danced until the last song played.

We caught up with newlywed Sarah upon her return from their honeymoon. It was fun to hear her reminisce about her big day.

    Q. How did you come to choose the Dells for your wedding?

We looked at some other locations, but nothing compared to all the amenities here. We wanted it to be fun for our guests, especially with so many coming from out of town. In our bridal party alone we had people from Pennsylvania, Kansas City, Phoenix, Dallas and Milwaukee! It was my husband's good idea.

    Q. Have you vacationed in the Dells before?

Yes, my family vacationed in the Dells, taking in the waterparks and Lake Delton. It is so much different from when we were little, but there's still Noah's Ark Waterpark and the Tommy Bartlett Show. The hotels are so nice.

    Q. Do you think you received more RSVPs because it was held in the Dells?

We were worried that so many close friends would not come this far and were really impressed by the number that came and spent the weekend in Wisconsin Dells. Some went camping, many stayed at the hotel. Many made a weekend out of it. We had lunch with friends on Friday. Sean golfed with the dads and his friends at Wild Rock Golf Club. It gave us more time with people, especially since the wedding day flies by.

    Q. What did your guests enjoy most while in the Dells, aside from the wedding of course?

People had so much fun at the waterparks, especially the families with little children. One friend from Phoenix came with three little boys - four-year-old twins and a two-year old - and they keep asking when they can come back to the Dells. We went to Monk's Bar & Grill at the Wilderness restaurant next to the resort for their dueling pianos show - my parents got up on stage, Sean's grandparents too, as both were celebrating anniversaries.

    Q. Did you and Sean get to enjoy the Wisconsin Dells waterparks?

We did!  We got to the resort on Thursday and spent all afternoon at the waterparks and then were back again all day Friday with our nieces and nephews. We even went again on Sunday and rented a poolside cabana. We had a blast! Everything was so well planned we had free time to enjoy the weekend.

    Q. Anything you'd change?  Any tips for other brides choosing Wisconsin Dells?

Honestly, I can't think of a single thing I'd change. It went so smoothly. Jennifer was amazing and worked so hard. We had a little hesitation planning a wedding in another city and she was so responsive and made all the planning a walk in the park. One thing I would recommend to other brides is to not over plan - people will have a good time because there is so much to do in the area.

    Q. What was your best memory of the day?

Walking down the aisle with my dad and seeing Sean at the altar. It was perfect and beautiful. That's the snapshot in my memory.
