    glockenspiel-downtown-dells-29German Glockenspiel - Downtown Dells

Take the children to see the giant Glockenspiel with a musical re-enactment of the legendary Pied Piper of Hamelin every half-hour, on the hour. The legend goes that the Pied Piper rid the town of Hamelin of its rats and mice by charming them away with his flute playing. When the citizens of Hamelin refused to pay the piper the price they had agreed upon, he charmed away their children in revenge.

The German Glockenspiel with its fairy tale re-enactment is FREE making it one of the best Wisconsin Dells deals. It's located in the 400 block of Broadway, Downtown Wisconsin Dells.

    dells-river-walk-wi-dells-29Dells RiverWalk

Stroll the Dells RiverWalk with vistas of the Wisconsin River and its sandstone bluffs now easily accessible to the public for the first time in 75 years. This ¼-mile paved path offers Dells visitors not only a breathtaking view of the Dells' unique scenery, but sprinkles in game tables and comfortable benches along its expanse in invitation to sit a spell and take in all of Mother Nature's glory. Walk, bike or run the Dells RiverWalk, but be sure to put this special experience on your Wisconsin Dells itinerary. It's one of the most scenic Wisconsin Dells activities available and it never disappoints.

The Dells RiverWalk entrance is located at the 100 block of Broadway in downtown Wisconsin Dells. It's free and open to the public year-round.

The Tour de Force for Foodies Starts with Wisconsin Dells Supper Clubs

If you can’t wait to relax over a brandy old-fashioned, munch on some Wisconsin artisan cheese before being seated, and then linger over a multi-course meal that might include yeasty rolls, crisp salad, rich soup, steak or seafood with an incredible sauce, a side of buttery baked potato or fresh asparagus, and decadent chocolate torte with aromatic coffee for dessert, then have we got the supper clubs for you.

Field’s at the Wilderness and the Del-Bar were both designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, which of course adds to the ambience of these restaurants in Wisconsin Dells.  Copper Oak Steak House, House of Embers, Kaminski Bros. Chop House and Ishnala Supper Club round out the list.  For one night, don’t lament the calories.  Just enjoy!

    Seasonally Sensational, Vegetarian, Homemade Dining

For a seasonal menu that is beyond words, check out High Rock Café in Downtown Dells.  It recently doubled in size, which is a sure testament to its popularity with visitors and newspaper restaurant critics alike.

For vegetarian, a pleasant surprise is the Cheese Factory Restaurant.  The entrées reflect flavors of the world.  It's a great way to be introduced to this style of cuisine.  Here’s a recommendation: Try their grilled cheese, named a Top 5 in the U.S. by Rachel Ray.

While dining in Wisconsin Dells, enjoy the beautiful landscaping outside Sarento’s Restaurant a treat for the eyes, while the extensive Italian menu and specialty pizzas offered are a treat for the tummy.

The surf and turf meal on the Dells Boat Tours Sunset Dinner Cruise is prepared fresh at one of the docking spots.  Their grill masters are to be commended.

Sweet tooths should unite at CheeseCake Heaven Deli Restaurant.  The owner literally spent four years perfecting her cheesecake recipe, which now comes in 90 varieties.  Everything on the restaurant menu is homemade too – pastas, soups, sandwiches, the whole nine yards.

Enjoy your food tour of Wisconsin Dells.

Reconnect with the World Around You

Technology pushes us ahead at warp speed. But there are times when slowing down to really appreciate the natural beauty of Wisconsin Dells is called for. Are you in for this itinerary? Then better get your gear packed.

Wisconsin Dells has more campgrounds than ever before and most offer a mix of sites. If you like tent camping, for example, reserve a site at Stand Rock Campground where there are 100 acres of hiking trails to keep you active or at Bonanza Campground & RV Park where they have a wooded area for tents only. Sherwood Forest Camping & RV Park has easy-on easy-off interstate access for those of you with big rigs and it’s within walking distance of the Dells’ downtown district. Pop-ups and RVs have a home at Mt. Olympus Zeus’ Village & Camp Resort.

Not traveling with gear, but still want a camping-esque experience? Rent a camping cabin at Yogi Bear’s Camp-Resort & Water Playground, a vacation park model at Holiday Shores Camp-Resort or a full-sized resort cabin at the eco-friendly Birchcliff Resort.

If you’re serious about fishing, you’ll likely be towing your own boat. Put it in the water at a public launch on Lake Delton and wait for the fish to bite. If you like the fishing action on the Wisconsin River, where reeling in bass, northern pike and walleye is an everyday occurrence, there’s a boat launch at River’s Edge Resort.

Three spectacular state parks prove Wisconsin Dells was smooched by Mother Nature. Devil’s Lake State Park is famous for its views from 500-foot-high cliffs. Mirror Lake State Park is so tranquil that you’ll find canoeing there to be a nearly religious experience. Rocky Arbor State Park, open Memorial Day through Labor Day, is a cool escape thanks to all the pine trees. And in downtown Dells there’s the RiverWalk, a paved trail that snakes along the river with game tables and park benches.

If you prefer to take in the beauty of the river from a seated position, buy a ticket for a ride aboard a classic double-decker riverboat, or a paddle wheeler, or one of those land-to-water vehicles everyone calls “the Ducks.” Pontoon boats are a fun way to roll from one end of Lake Delton to the other.

An attraction that should be on every nature-lovers’ itinerary is the International Crane Foundation, a restored nature sanctuary and the only place in the world where you can see all 15 species of those majestic birds.

Keep it easy on the environment by dining at restaurants that believe in fresh seasonal ingredients sourced locally when possible. High on the list is High Rock Café, with its cosmopolitan-style seasonal menus and Cheesecake Heaven Deli Restaurant just across the street where everything is made from scratch including the mayo on the sandwiches. For vegetarians (and those who just love food made with lots of flavorful herbs and spices), the Cheese Factory Restaurant is one special place.

Choosing “Best Of” Food Finds is Delicious Duty
    2012-08-16

monksWhen you have more than 100 restaurants, confectionaries and specialty food stores to choose from, as you do in Wisconsin Dells, the process can be incredibly satisfying.

Setting out to catalogue some of the “best of” food finds in the Dells was no small task. Locals have their favorites and proved a good starting point for recommendations. Sheer traffic to eateries was another tip-off. Of course, the ultimate critique comes in the taste. Here is a sampling - it’s by no means an exhaustive list, as that would require a book - to help guide your culinary decisions the next time you’re visiting Wisconsin Dells.

    Best of Cheese
It’s Wisconsin, so we had no choice but to start the list with cheese.

    • For fresh cheese curds in all their squeaky goodness, shop Market Square Cheese. For the deep-fried variety, the Sand Bar's version goes great with their homemade hot tomato relish.
    • Best grilled cheese sandwich goes to the Cheese Factory Restaurant - it was named one of the Top 5 in the country by celebrity chef Rachel Ray.
    • Best mac and cheese for grown-ups can be found at High Rock Café - they call their rich and creamy entrée Big Kid Mac & Cheese and you can even customize the spiciness of this traditional favorite.

    Best Burger

The undisputed winner here is the Original Monk’s Burger at the classic Monk’s Bar & Grill in downtown Dells. This is the burger that started it all, or so it says on the menu. It’s a fresh patty simmered on the seasoned grill. The grill is right at the front of the joint with the aromas piped outside - the original owner called it “aroma marketing.”

    Best Ribs

House of Embers claims honors in this category. In 1959, Wally Obois decided his new restaurant would be famous for hickory smoked BBQ ribs. And so it came to be. Today his son Mike uses the same technique to make these deliciously tender ribs using a specially designed smoke house and a secret BBQ sauce. And they are.

    Best Friday Night Fish Fry

    • For atmosphere and food, the Friday Night fish fry at River’s Edge Pub & Grub can’t be beat - the cod is broasted and the dining room features a 4,000-gallon aquarium filled with local fish.
    • Also in contention - the classic Wisconsin fish fry offering at Italian restaurant Sarento’s Restaurant, of all places, and the fish plate at Ravina Bay Bar & Grill, which pairs well with their homemade clam chowder.

    Best Deep Dish Pizza

    • In its menu description, Uno Chicago Grill claims to have invented deep dish pizza. We don’t know about that, but there’s no arguing their pizza, with dough made fresh every day, is delicious. The Wisconsin Dells restaurant is owned by husband/wife team of Mike and Laura Nate.
    • Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille, Pizza Ranch of Wisconsin Dells, Pizza Villa and Pizza Pub are shoo-ins in the broader pizza category.

    Best Steaks

Wisconsin Dells is known for its quintessential Wisconsin supper clubs and at these supper clubs you’ll find the most delicious steaks around. In this category, you won’t go wrong making reservations at Field’s at the Wilderness, Ishnala Supper Club, Del-Bar, Kaminski Bros. Chop House, Copper Oak Steak House or House of Embers.

    Best Sweet Treats

    • For donuts, the Paul Bunyan’s Northwoods Cook Shanty variety served at breakfast and in their bakery is legendary. Holiday Shores Camp-Resort makes theirs homemade and their guests always line up at the counter before the first donuts come out of the fryer.
    • For desserts, the list is a mile long, but you should, at least once in your life, try any flavor of homemade cheesecake at the CheeseCake Heaven Deli Restaurant, the to-die-for dessert bars at River Moon Café, artisian cakes at the Cheese Factory Restaurant, or a one-of-a-kind flavor creation at Cold Stone Cremery.
    • For homemade fudge, it’s a tie between Swiss Maid Fudge and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge, both celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2012.

    Wisconsin Cranberry Confections

Did you know Wisconsin is the nation’s largest producer of cranberries? For that reason alone we were compelled to make this a category onto itself. And the winner is Cranberry Connections, where you can indulge in five flavors of cranberry ice cream, all made at a small dairy right in state, cranberry raspberry salt water taffy, white craisin pretzel bark and their #1 seller, craisin cashew crunch. The candy looks especially pretty when served in one of their collectible cranberry glass bowls.

Classic Charm - Downtown Wisconsin Dells
    2014-06-17

Vacationers typically want two things from a getaway. They want “new” as in new and fun attractions, shops and restaurants as a way to keep it fresh and feed their explorer side. And they want “old” as in charming, classic, please-don’t-ever-change  to feed their nostalgic side. It’s a real feat when a destination can deliver both. Wisconsin Dells is one such destination and they do it best in their downtown river district.

So let’s start with the modern. Might be easiest to classify these as the “uptown” offerings of downtown Dells. There’s a contemporary, hip vibe that’s taking hold in the 200 block of Broadway. Here you’ll find High Rock Café, an eatery with a foodie following thanks to its ingenious seasonal menus and craft cocktails. Down the block are MACS - Macaroni And Cheese Shop that’s as far from the box version as you can get, and Monk’s Bar & Grill and Dells Distillery restaurant and bar. Across the street is CheeseCake Heaven, part deli, part bakery, with homemade goodies, including to-die-for secret recipe cheesecakes in tons of flavors.

For shopping, Alpha Beta Karma boutique brings out the best in women with its on-trend apparel, fashion-forward footwear and artisan jewelry. Winnebago Fine Goods & Gift Shop, while a staple for Minnetonka moccasins since 1949 and still one of the country’s largest purveyors of the iconic and very comfy footwear, has evolved into an emporium for casually hip clothes, especially for men.

What’s a vibrant downtown without entertainment. On warm summer evenings you’ll see crowds gathering at the corner of Eddy and Broadway to enjoy a salsa band one night, a polka band another, or maybe cloggers or a high-energy drum line another.

For grown-ups, the festivities can continue inside at Showboat Saloon, with its prohibition past, or in their open-air beer garden known as Mama’s Garage. There’s a similar indoor/outdoor combo at The Keg Bar & Grill/Baja Cantina. For family fun, try Wild Fun Zone, Wizard Quest and Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum.

Now for the charming. The classic boat tours of the Upper Dells of the Wisconsin River, courtesy Dells Boat Tours®, depart from downtown Dells where Broadway dips to meet River Road. So do the jet boat tours. Take a turn on the RiverWalk for a preview of the scenic beauty that’s in store, and make a point to pop in the H.H. Bennett studio/historic site after to compare your cell phone photos with the photos taken by Henry Hamilton Bennett from the 19th century, considered “the Golden Age of landscape photography.” Or you can grab a bite to eat while gazing out at the river views. River Walk Pub is the very definition of a friendly Wisconsin pub, with a menu heavy on burgers and a classic Friday night fish fry.

While on the subject of food, the fudge and confection shops, one on nearly every block, will wear down your willpower in short order. Plus there’s a place called Oodlesmack Popcorn that has gourmet candy-flavored concoctions that you probably dreamed about as a kid, along with classic caramel varieties for the purists.
Bowling is classic and so is Chalet Lanes. Ditto for photo souvenirs and the old-time portrait studios. And mini golf at Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf and Timber Falls Adventure Park.

The mom-and-pop hotels and motels downtown have a charm to them that’s just can’t be replicated anywhere else.

Downtown Wisconsin Dells is a walkable, wonderful stretch of all that’s good about getting away.
