If you leave without trying the Strawberry Schaum Torte, shame on you. This tower of chewy confectionary clouds with centers the consistency of marshmallow goodness alternating with whipped cream and strawberries, has been on the menu for 50 years, and is divine in its simplicity. As owner Jane Wimmer pointed out, it requires just a few ingredients, but delights on many levels. Close competitors to this top dessert -- the Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Torte.

Here, we recommend Bonnie's Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie. It's a mouthful, to be sure. Named after owner's wife, here's an analysis of this Dells pie from the bottom up. The crust is made with toasted pecans, then it's filled with vanilla ice cream, topped with lemon curd, then frozen. Next it's covered with a golden crown of meringue and candied lemon zest. Obois says this pie, which is served year-round, is his personal favorite.

    cheese-factory-restaurant-wisconsin-dellsCheese Factory Restaurant

When you walk in this pretty little Wisconsin Dells restaurant -- it's actually housed in a converted cheese factory, thus the name -- your eyes will invariably be drawn to a rotating glass case filled with mouthwatering desserts. There are classic fudge brownies, cute cupcakes piled high with frosting, seasonal pies -- all homemade mind you. But the Princess Cake will call to you. Picture vanilla cake between layers of lemon butter-cream frosting and raspberry filling, then covered with roasted almonds. Enough said.

Other restaurants noteworthy for their desserts include Field's at the Wilderness (Bananas Foster), Kaminski Bros. Chop House (their signature KBC Brownie Sundae) and Ishnala Supper Club (pecan cinnamon rolls, which come with the meal, but are absolutely dessert-worthy).

    Recognized For Their Good Taste
    2010-04-01

wisconsin-dells-restaurants-cheese-factory-28Restaurant reviews and culinary awards count for a lot with travelers, especially “foodies” who plan their trips around local food finds.  So the Wisconsin Dells Visitor Bureau decided to poll the local restaurants on its roster to see who’s been recognized for their good taste.  Here’s a quick sampling:

    • Uno Pizzeria & Grill was named America’s #1 Healthiest Chain Restaurant by Health Magazine.
    • Cheese Factory Restaurant made it big on “Everyday with Rachel Ray,” with its Big Cheese sandwich recognized as one of four “Over the Top” grilled cheese sandwiches in the country.
    • Culver’s (two area locations), a Wisconsin original, was voted the #1 Burger Chain in America in the Consumers’ Choice poll from Restaurants & Institutions Magazine.
    • High Rock Café has held the top spot among Wisconsin Dells restaurants for several years running based on TripAdvisor.com consumer reviews.
    • Two area supper clubs - Field’s at the Wilderness and the Del-Bar - have been honored with awards from Wine Spectator Magazine.

The most recent culinary honor, however, goes not to a restaurant in Wisconsin Dells but to a B&B - Bowman’s Oak Hill Bed and Breakfast, LLC.  Innkeeper Nancy Bowman won a recent Wisconsin Bed & Breakfast Association’s statewide recipe cook-off for her Wild Rice Cran-Apple Breakfast Bake. The judges, who included two Culinary Institute of America-trained chefs, plus a food journalist and author, praised Bowman's winning dish for its contrast of "hearty" with "sweet" and its "tremendous mix of robust flavors with creative extras."  Bowman was pleased to share her recipe.

Could This Be The Next French Riviera?
    2010-04-01

There's no denying the Dells is "kid central." Families, extended families, family reunion groups, groups of friends with children in tow -- you get the picture -- have made the Dells their preferred vacation hangout. So could the rumblings be true, that Wisconsin Dells has an alter ego that is high-end and geared towards grown-ups? Here's how the evidence stacks up.

    Luxury Wisconsin Dells Resorts

    Luxury Digs

Sure, the water park resorts are grand, but try a golf villa at Chula Vista Resort or a private adults-only spa villa at Sundara Inn & Spa, and you'll know you've arrived. These are so sophisticated and so richly appointed, you probably won't want to leave.

Wollersheim Winery - Dells Area WineriesFINE WINE

Not everyone can afford to hop a plane to Italy, or France, or Napa Valley for that matter to indulge their taste for fine wine. But certainly a trip to Prairie du Sac, just a half-hour drive from the Dells, should be manageable. There you'll find the Wollersheim Winery in all its historic splendor. Originally established in the 1840s by Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy no less, and nestled in the hills overlooking the Wisconsin River valley, this property features buildings with incredible character, outdoor seating with views to the vineyard, lovely gardens and a new tasting room. There's a new winery in Wisconsin Dells too - it's called Fawn Creek Winery. Or, if you prefer your wine served with a fine meal, ask to see the wine list at Field's at the Wilderness or the Del-Bar. Both restaurants in Wisconsin Dells were designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, and both have graced the pages of Wine Spectator Magazine.

Wisconsin Dells Spas - Spa SerenityIndulgent Spa Services

Celebrities insist on it and so must you. It's a spa service to soothe those jangled nerves and make your skin glow. At Spa Serenity (don't you just love the name!), go for the "A Night Out Facial." At Sundara Inn & Spa, the Slimming Body Wrap and Bath Salt treatment seems like something a starlet would have before walking the red carpet. Even if you're vacationing at Wisconsin Dells water park hotels like Chula Vista, the Wilderness or Kalahari, sneak away to their on-site spa for a little pampering that's good for you.

Alpha Beta Karma - Wisconsin DellsDesigner Shopping

Fashionistas never eschew style simply because they're on vacation.  In fact, it's quite the contrary - they're on the look-out for on-trend finds they won't find closer to home.  The Wisconsin Dells shopping itinerary for any self-respecting fashionista must include stops at Artistic Expressions Gift Gallery for artisan jewelry and textiles, Affordable Leather and More for a new handbag, Alpha Beta Karma for designer fashion straight from east and west coast designers and Cranberry Connections for scarves and totes to complete the outfit.

    Dells Golf CoursesChampionship Golf

It's almost unimaginable that a community of just 20 square miles could have three championship golf courses. Yet, it does. Reserve a tee time at Wild Rock Golf Club, Trappers Turn Golf Club, Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort or all three and then golf to your heart's content.

    Prefer The Wisconsin Dells Classics

Enduring. Endearing. Those were the two words that guided the research for this story on the classic Wisconsin Dells vacation. Many of the Wisconsin Dells hotels, attractions and restaurants included below have been building up a fan base for decades and across generations. Others are slightly more contemporary classics that still say “Wisconsin Dells” in a big way. Combined, they make for lots of choices for travelers who like to go classic.

classic-dells-motels-100Classic Wisconsin Dells Hotels & Motels

A good starting point is downtown, where classic Wisconsin Dells hotel and motels right on the main street are well maintained and still very popular. There’s Fitzgerald’s Motel, where the front sign reminds you to “Smile, you’re on vacation.” Last year, Fitzgerald’s celebrated its 60th anniversary, and owner Margaret Gewont is 100% sincere when she tells you guests are more like extended family than vacationers. A peek in the guest book proves it, with the first entry reading: “Margaret is the ultimate hostess.” The list of downtown Wisconsin Dells hotels and motels is long and varied, so take your pick.

    downtown-wi-dells-shops-100Downtown Wisconsin Dells

As long as you’re already on the main thoroughfare, keep your car parked and put on your walking shoes for a stroll up and down Broadway. You’ll pass fudge shops like Swiss Maid Fudge and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge and likely succumb to the sweets being made behind the picture windows. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, with its quirky and fun-to-read-about displays from adventures of days gone by, is one of the many amusing Wisconsin Dells attractions on Broadway. As long as you’re downtown, go ahead and have one of those old-timey pictures taken. For souvenirs, Bailey’s Landing and Winnebago Gift Shop are both known for their wide selection of Minnetonka moccasins, a fashion statement in Wisconsin and on the runways of New York.

    wisconsin-river-tours-100Classic Wisconsin River Tours

On your walk through the Dells, you’re sure to see a Duck or two. Not the feathered kind, but the WWII amphibious vehicle kind that takes visitors on tours of Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River. Hop on and enjoy the splashdowns and scenery. Another classic river tour choice is a tour boat, either double decker or paddlewheeler. Some even offer shore landings, which is really the best way to experience the grandeur of the sandstone bluffs in the area.

    dells-animal-attractions-100Animal-Related Dells Attractions

Now on to real animals, as in the deer at Wisconsin Deer Park, one of the classic Wisconsin Dells attractions that’s been in business for more than 50 years. Here you can feed the deer and also interact with American elk and bison. Wisconsin Deer Park also acts as a zoological supply service, with deer from their park being placed in zoos all over the country.

    tommy-bartlett-show-100Tommy Bartlett Classic Attractions

Two Wisconsin Dells attractions that begin with the founder’s name, Tommy Bartlett, are staples on the classic vacation itinerary. There’s the famous Tommy Bartlett Show staged on Lake Delton, the longest running water ski show of its kind in the country. It's replete with complicated ski tricks, fast boats, comedy and acrobatic acts thrown in for good measure. Plus, the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory - Interactive Science Center is also known for its hundreds of hands-on science experiments, a real Russian MIR space station and an exact replica of NASA’s Mercury space capsule.

noahs-ark-water-park-100Noah's Ark Waterpark - A Classic Wisconsin Dells Water Park

If you want to experience a classic Dells water park, then Noah’s Ark Waterpark is it. It opened in 1979 and is the largest outdoor water park in the country, adding something new nearly every year.

    More Wisconsin Dells Classics

There are a number of other classic finds worthy of their own mention. In lodging, Dell Creek Motel, with its pretty courtyard gardens, has some of the best curb appeal in the community. On Lake Delton, there’s Baker’s Sunset Bay Resort, a fun place for family reunions. For shopping, Aunt Jenny’s Got-It-All Store is a third-generation Dells’ family business which prides itself on its fun selection of apparel, souvenirs, moccasins, jewelry and toys. For breakfast, try Mr. Pancake with 30 varieties of pancakes and waffles; Paul Bunyan’s Northwoods Cook Shanty with scrumptious donuts; or Howie’s Restaurant, home of Howie’s self-proclaimed “Huge Breakfast” and, if you’re really hungry, his “Super Breakfast.”

    wisconsin-supper-clubs-100Classic Wisconsin Supper Clubs

The classic Wisconsin supper clubs in the area deserve a paragraph of their own. If you’re wondering what the requirements are for supper club designation, here goes: clubby bar in which to enjoy that Wisconsin cocktail favorite, the brandy old fashioned, before you sit down to your meal; well trained staff who see to your every need and never rush you; crisp table linens; interesting architecture; relish trays and fresh baked rolls, standout wine cellar; and steaks, seafood and chops that are remarkable. If that sounds mouthwatering to you, then consider one special dinner out at the Del-Bar, Field’s at the Wilderness, House of Embers, Ishnala Supper Club, or the newest entry in the genre of classic supper clubs, Kaminski Bros. Chop House at Chula Vista Resort.

    big-sky-twin-drive-in-wisconsin-dells

    Drive-In Movies In The Dells

For one last flash from the past in the Dells, the drive-in movie.  Big Sky Twin Drive-In Theater shows double features of first-run movies on two screens every night during the summer. Its concession stand is kitschy and comfortably cramped, serving everything you’d want from a classic snack bar. Side note, if you stay at Holiday Shores Camp-Resort or the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort, ask about their seasonal outdoor movies too, shown right on the grounds.

That’s it, the classic Wisconsin Dells getaway, filled with sweet memories to last until the next time you visit.

What Kind of Meal Are You in the Mood For?

The Tour de Force for Foodies Starts with Wisconsin Dells Supper Clubs

If you can’t wait to relax over a brandy old-fashioned, munch on some Wisconsin artisan cheese before being seated, and then linger over a multi-course meal that might include yeasty rolls, crisp salad, rich soup, steak or seafood with an incredible sauce, a side of buttery baked potato or fresh asparagus, and decadent chocolate torte with aromatic coffee for dessert, then have we got the supper clubs for you.

Field’s at the Wilderness and the Del-Bar were both designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, which of course adds to the ambience of these restaurants in Wisconsin Dells.  Copper Oak Steak House, House of Embers, Kaminski Bros. Chop House and Ishnala Supper Club round out the list.  For one night, don’t lament the calories.  Just enjoy!

    Seasonally Sensational, Vegetarian, Homemade Dining

For a seasonal menu that is beyond words, check out High Rock Café in Downtown Dells.  It recently doubled in size, which is a sure testament to its popularity with visitors and newspaper restaurant critics alike.

For vegetarian, a pleasant surprise is the Cheese Factory Restaurant.  The entrées reflect flavors of the world.  It's a great way to be introduced to this style of cuisine.  Here’s a recommendation: Try their grilled cheese, named a Top 5 in the U.S. by Rachel Ray.

While dining in Wisconsin Dells, enjoy the beautiful landscaping outside Sarento’s Restaurant a treat for the eyes, while the extensive Italian menu and specialty pizzas offered are a treat for the tummy.

The surf and turf meal on the Dells Boat Tours Sunset Dinner Cruise is prepared fresh at one of the docking spots.  Their grill masters are to be commended.

Sweet tooths should unite at CheeseCake Heaven Deli Restaurant.  The owner literally spent four years perfecting her cheesecake recipe, which now comes in 90 varieties.  Everything on the restaurant menu is homemade too – pastas, soups, sandwiches, the whole nine yards.

Enjoy your food tour of Wisconsin Dells.
