Classic Experience

For Wisconsin Dells insiders, the place for burgers is Monk’s Bar & Grill, located in an 1800s-era building smack dab in the middle of downtown. Monk Burgers have been legendary since 1947, when owner Monk Heineke first wafted the smell of burgers and onions frying all the way up and down the main street. Monk called it “aroma marketing,” and it has lured customers in the door for more than 60 years. Monk’s is one of the oldest restaurants in Wisconsin Dells and many tasty traditions continue yet today. Wisconsinites enjoy the fact that it’s also a shrine for Badger memorabilia.

Directions

Monk’s is located downtown on the Wisconsin Dells famous “strip”

  • Take Exit 87 (off I90-94) and merge onto WI-13 N toward Wisconsin Dells.
  • Continue East (straight) for approximately 1.5 miles

2011-09-18Wo-Zha-Wa days and Monks--two awesome events! Four of us visited Monks and each of us requested a hamburger which we would share (due to plans for a fish fry in the next two hours). Oh my gosh--the half hamburgers were EACH served in a separate basket and with french fries! The fried and raw onions that we requested were each served in individual dishes so we could dress our own hamburgers. We were all pleasantly surprised and so grateful for this over & above customer service. Thank You so much, Monk's!

2010-06-30I've been bringing my family to Wisc Dells for many years and I have to tell you my favorite thing to do is eat burgers at the original Monk's Bar downtown. If you want to taste the most amazing burger, you HAVE to go to Monk's downtown. We usually stay at the Dells for 3-4 days and it's mandatory that we eat at Monk's at least twice! The buns are super soft, the burger melts in your mouth and they top it off with the most delicious pickles...you just can't describe how great they taste. It's that seasoned grill they use, it's a one of a kind. We're going to be there over 4th of July again this year so get our burgers ready!

ishnala-mirror-lake-wi-dells-19For starters, let’s sample a favorite appetizer, the cheese spread at Ishnala, here in the Dells. This restaurant is perched on a plot of land overlooking Mirror Lake that was once ceremonial grounds for the Winnebago Indians and later a trading post. The salads and rolls are the perfect next course. Ishnala is open Memorial Day through mid-October, so plan accordingly. For soup, the loaded potato soup at the High Rock Café in Downtown Dells is one of those instant classics worth a stop unto itself. And the view from this second-story restaurant lets you see all the comings and goings while you simply relax with an incredible bowl of homemade goodness. Ask about their soup du jour too.

kaminski-bros-chophouse-wisconsin-dells-steak-19The side dish to order, hands down, is the "fully loaded mashed potatoes" at the Kaminski Bros. Chophouse, a great restaurant in Wisconsin Dells restaurant located inside the Chula Vista Resort. This mountain of potatoes, enough for four or more, is loaded with flavors. Given the taste and the portion size, you’ll be happy to take home leftovers.

house-of-embers-wi-dells-restaurants-19For entrees, we recommend the ribs at House of Embers, the walleye at the Del-Bar, and the burgers at Monk’s Bar & Grill in Downtown Dells. Let’s start with the ribs. In 1959, Wally Obois decided his new restaurant would be famous for hickory smoked BBQ ribs. And so it came to be. Today his son Mike uses the same technique to make these deliciously tender ribs using a specially designed smoke house and a secret BBQ sauce.

del-bar-wisconsin-dells-fine-dining-19Over at the Del-Bar supper club, established in 1943 as a roadside steakhouse and also owned and operated by the original family, the pan-fried walleye is to die for. The staff, some of whom have been there 20 years, will be happy to recommend just the right wine from the restaurant’s extensive wine cellar to accompany the fish. Delish.

On a more casual note, the place to go for burgers is Monk’s. Just ask any local. This place has been serving "World Famous" burgers since 1947. Choose from one of 10 types of burgers on the menu and, while you’re at it, why not ask for a side order of deep fried Wisconsin Dells white cheddar cheese curds too. Monk’s has two locations - the original downtown bar and grill, and an expansive new restaurant at the Wilderness Resort, one of our lovely Wisconsin Dells resorts.

For the sweet tooths in the crowd, this culinary adventure is just not complete without a stop at the Cheese Factory Restaurant. The building was actually a cheese factory for decades, a Wisconsin Dells landmark of sorts, before being converted into an eatery. The desserts here are made the old-fashioned way - hand-made by specific bakers who are responsible only for that particular dessert. There’s Glorious Chocolate Cake and Hazlenut Torte, but our favorite has to be the Princess Cake -- vanilla cake between layers of lemon butter-cream frosting and raspberry filling and covered with roasted almonds. Check please.

    monks-wisconsin-dells-restaurants-23Monk's Bar & Grill

Let's start with the original Monk's Bar & Grill located in Downtown Wisconsin Dells, named after Monk Heineke. What makes Monk's one of the memorable restaurants in Wisconsin Dells aside from the best burgers in the Dells, is the University of Wisconsin Badgers' memorabilia. It's a shrine to the red-and-white because Monk's sons played football for UW-Madison back in the late 1950s.

Showboat Saloon - Wisconsin Dells Bars

    Showboat Saloon

Just down the street is the Showboat Saloon, with its Tug's Kitchen restaurant. Located in a 100-year old building with a distinctive wedge shape, Showboat's always housed a bar, except during Prohibition, although some say drinks were still available through a speakeasy in the basement of this Wisconsin Dells restaurant and bar.

Mr. Pancake - Wisconsin Dells Restaurants

    Mr. Pancake

The landlocked Mr. Pancake restaurant in Wisconsin Dells looks like a paddlewheel boat. Why? Because the owners wanted to give patrons the feel of "dining on the water."

    Paul Bunyans Dells Restaurants

    Paul Bunyan's Northwoods Cook Shanty

If you're into "muffler men" -- those big fiberglass statues that dot the American landscape -- then pull up to Paul Bunyan's Northwoods Cook Shanty, where good ol' Paul towers over this establishment.

    So, now you know!

    glockenspiel-downtown-dells-29German Glockenspiel - Downtown Dells

Take the children to see the giant Glockenspiel with a musical re-enactment of the legendary Pied Piper of Hamelin every half-hour, on the hour. The legend goes that the Pied Piper rid the town of Hamelin of its rats and mice by charming them away with his flute playing. When the citizens of Hamelin refused to pay the piper the price they had agreed upon, he charmed away their children in revenge.

The German Glockenspiel with its fairy tale re-enactment is FREE making it one of the best Wisconsin Dells deals. It's located in the 400 block of Broadway, Downtown Wisconsin Dells.

    dells-river-walk-wi-dells-29Dells RiverWalk

Stroll the Dells RiverWalk with vistas of the Wisconsin River and its sandstone bluffs now easily accessible to the public for the first time in 75 years. This ¼-mile paved path offers Dells visitors not only a breathtaking view of the Dells' unique scenery, but sprinkles in game tables and comfortable benches along its expanse in invitation to sit a spell and take in all of Mother Nature's glory. Walk, bike or run the Dells RiverWalk, but be sure to put this special experience on your Wisconsin Dells itinerary. It's one of the most scenic Wisconsin Dells activities available and it never disappoints.

The Dells RiverWalk entrance is located at the 100 block of Broadway in downtown Wisconsin Dells. It's free and open to the public year-round.

indoor-water-parks-wi-dells-99Wisconsin Dells Indoor & Outdoor Water Parks

Some families just seem to have the adrenaline gene.  You know the type.  They’re happiest when every second is filled with adventure, intrigue, exploration and fun.  And that just covers plans for the morning.  If you’re one of those, Wisconsin Dells applauds your energy and zest for life.  In fact, you’ll feel right at home in this, “The Waterpark Capital of the World!®”, given many of the attractions here sprung up with family fun in mind.  Plan for at least a few days to get to everything on your list, knowing there will be plenty of time to sleep later.

Let’s commence with a lodging choice.  Of course there are great water park resorts.  The area has small, medium, large and gargantuan-sized water park resorts, so it’s your choice.  If you like the option of indoor and outdoor water parks, then consider one of the five largest - the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort, the Kalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center, Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Parks, Chula Vista Resort or Great Wolf Lodge.  The number of rides, slides, tube funnels and watercoasters your family can play on is staggering.  The surf machine at Kalahari is enough to keep tweens and teens occupied for hours at a time as they try to catch a wave indoors.  At the Wilderness Resort, the place is so sprawling they have shuttles to take you from one water park to the next on the property.  Their new zip line gives you a lay of the land from the air as you glide above the tree tops.  Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Parks' outdoor water park includes a surf pool with nine-foot waves and a sandy beach and six side-by-side racing slides. Their indoor water park includes towering tube slides and endless river. Chula Vista Resort has an outdoor water park overlooking the Wisconsin River, a second outdoor water park on the other side of the property, and an indoor water park that you access via an underground tunnel.  Very cool.  Great Wolf Lodge has built its stock in trade with the younger kids and has themed their place to the hilt.

    outdoor-theme-parks-wi-dells-99America's Largest Outdoor Water Park

If you plan to visit Wisconsin Dells during the warm weather months, you could stay at your favorite hotel or motel, and then head out first thing in the morning to spend the day at Noah’s Ark Waterpark, the country’s largest outdoor water park.  Noah’s Ark has the extremes, with the family friendly Tadpole Bay at one end of the spectrum and the new Scorpion’s Tail loop-de-loop extreme tube slide for bigger kids and adults at the other end.  Bring comfortable aqua shoes as you and your family will be covering 70 acres in your quest to try all 80 rides, slides and activities at Noah’s.

    indoor-theme-parks-dells-99Indoor Wisconsin Dells Amusement Parks

When you’ve logged sufficient hours at the water parks, dry off the kids and head to the indoor amusement parks.  Kalahari Indoor Theme Park has a six-story high Ferris wheel, multi-level go-kart track, laser tag, 24 lanes of bowling, a ton of arcade games, a ropes course, climbing wall and mini-golf.  Let’s all pause to catch our breath.  Knuckleheads Bowling & Indoor Amusement Park also has two dozen lanes of bowling, a 4D theatre ride, bumper cars and go-karts, plus you can grab dinner next door at Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille, where their three secret-recipe BBQ sauces, made and bottled on premise, making family dining there triple the fun.

    outdoor-theme-parks-wi-dells-99Outdoor Dells Amusement Parks

There are outdoor amusement parks that are must-stops for families who crave fun and exhilaration.  Timber Falls Adventure Park has a roller coaster called the Hellcat that features 70-degree banks and 10-story drops and is a favorite among roller coaster fan clubs.  You’ll get some air on the coaster, and even more air on their end-over-end ride called the Skyscraper.  It pulls 4 Gs at 60 mph 160 feet off the ground.

    mini-golf-wisconsin-dells-99Mini-Golf In Wisconsin Dells

Time to move on to mini-golf.  Actually, you can stay put at Timber Falls and golf 72 holes, all in the shade of tall pines along the Wisconsin River.  There’s also Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf.

    wi-dells-go-karts-99Dells Go-Kart Tracks

Large outdoor go-kart tracks are a favorite for families who like a little competition with their fun.  ADare Go Carts is everything you’d expect from a good track - hairpin turns, fast straightaways and racing through waterfalls (this is Wisconsin Dells, after all.)

jet-boats-wi-river-99Jet Boats On The Wisconsin River

Right about now you may be looking to cool off a little.  Take a jet boat ride on the Wisconsin River and you’ll cool off a lot, as in get soaked while the wind is whipping through your hair.  These rides are a blast, from the first 360-degree turn to the last, all under the power of a 1,200 hp engine.  There are two companies offering this option - Jet Boat Adventures and WildThing Jet Boats.

    wi-dells-live-entertainment-99Dells Live Entertainment

End the day with some family entertainment that plays with your senses - Dells 4D Special FX Theater is a good choice, as is the Rick Wilcox Magic Theater - and then a great burger at Monk’s Bar & Grill, either the original restaurant downtown or the expanded version at the Wilderness Resort.

There, that should be enough family fun and adventure for one Wisconsin Dells getaway.

Play On In Wisconsin Dells2012-01-02If you're among the myriad of parents and families in town for youth sports tournaments, we have a stong hunch you'll be looking for things to do between the games. And boy oh boy, do we have some super recommendations for you!Read More
    Play On In Wisconsin Dells
    2012-01-02

The Dells is quickly becoming a sports mecca for youth tournaments, events and camps, and the 2012 warm weather season stands to be the best ever, with basketball, softball and volleyball filling up the calendar. For filling down time between games may we suggest some non-competitive activities. Then fill up on good eats to keep those energy levels high.

Start outdoors - the fresh air will do you good - with a Duck tour of the Wisconsin River. If the coach gives the go-ahead, head to an outdoor waterpark like Noah’s Art Waterpark, where you can try the new Quadzilla racer slides (remember, no need to be too competitive, as it’s primarily intended as adrenaline-inducing fun). Or go from screaming for the team to screaming on a roller coaster.

Balance your time in the sun with some indoor fun.

In Downtown Dells, you’ll find Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, a place loaded with exhibits that are oddly captivating. Next door is Wizard Quest, a full-size labyrinth adventure in which your goal is to find and free the wizards of the realm. For kids with an artistic streak, maybe siblings who are along to cheer on a brother or sister, there’s Paint It! Pottery Shop, where they can create their own masterpiece. Wild Fun Zone is the place with the big gorilla on the top of the building and bumper cars, mini golf and laser tag inside.

On the Wisconsin Dells Parkway, there’s the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory - Interactive Science Center, with more than 175 interactive exhibits, including a virtual sports center that’s sure to be a hit for obvious reasons. Adjacent to Great Wolf Lodge is MagiQuest, a four-story live action adventure game with players using magic wands - score!

After you’ve worked up an appetite, take the team to one of the two Monk’s Bar & Grill restaurants in Wisconsin Dells for a classic burger the locals love. Other player favorites include Pizza Pub, Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille, and River Walk Pub.

    Go team!
