2012-06-24We loved our experience at Moosejaw, the atmosphere was relaxing after a long day at the water park. The menu was kid and adult friendly and I highly recommend this place!

2011-10-11My husband and I were in the Dells around the 10th of October and not much was open and just happened to find this restaurant. It was just our style even though we are grandparents and not into sports - the decor was great, the food was outstanding and our waiter was very nice. We actually went back the next day to try other menu items. We would definitely recommend this place to others, especially if you are not a fan of buffets or chain restaurants.

2008-10-13While we didn't eat inside the restaurant my wife and I got carry-out from Moosejaw and wow, was it amazing food! We both ordered from their build-you-own pasta menu and for what we paid we got great food. We also ordered a side of Beer Bread and I recommend it to anyone who eats here. The service was fast and our food was ready right away. However when my wife went in to pick up the food she said it was pretty loud because of all the families, and the parking lot and restaurant were both packed, so I recommend either getting their before the dinner rush or going on a week day.

Families with Toddlers: Vacation Now Before School Lets Out

Wisconsin Dells has been known as a family-friendly vacation destination for more than a few generations, and this includes activities perfect for the littlest members of the family too. If you have children under the age of five, here are a few suggestions on where to stay and where to play.

Where to Stay Great Wolf Lodge is ideal for families with little ones, both the accommodations and the waterpark. Wilderness Resort, Chula Vista Resort, Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park, and Kalahari Resorts & Conventions made toddler-friendly play areas a priority too. Baker’s Sunset Bay Resort on Lake Delton is a classic with modern amenities. Lots of mid-size resorts with water playgrounds too, like Atlantis Waterpark Hotel & Suites, Alakai Hotel & Suites, Meadowbrook Resort, and Grand Marquis Waterpark Hotel & Suites. Spring Brook Resort offers easy vacationing in their rental homes and condos. If you like to camp, Sherwood Forest Camping & RV Park is a sure choice, with a toddler-friendly splash pad.

Where to See Animals Timbavati Wildlife Park has behind-the-scenes tours where the children can get up-close with the exotic animals. At Wisconsin Deer Park, they can feed the gentle deer. Don’t forget about the ducks, as in a scenic tour of the Wisconsin River aboard an amphibious DUCK land-to-water vehicle. Circus World, a national historic treasure in nearby Baraboo, has different shows daily under the Big Top.

Where to Eat Meals are delivered by miniature train at Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille. MACS - Macaroni and Cheese Shop has two locations, with gourmet mac and cheese offerings for mom and dad too.  For breakfast, Mr. Pancake is a tradition, as is Paul Bunyan’s Northwoods Cook Shanty.

Stroller Friendly The Scenic River Walk downtown is stroller friendly and the views are stunning. Great for family selfies.

Play On In Wisconsin Dells2012-01-02If you're among the myriad of parents and families in town for youth sports tournaments, we have a stong hunch you'll be looking for things to do between the games. And boy oh boy, do we have some super recommendations for you!Read More
Play On In Wisconsin Dells
2012-01-02

The Dells is quickly becoming a sports mecca for youth tournaments, events and camps, and the 2012 warm weather season stands to be the best ever, with basketball, softball and volleyball filling up the calendar. For filling down time between games may we suggest some non-competitive activities. Then fill up on good eats to keep those energy levels high.

Start outdoors - the fresh air will do you good - with a Duck tour of the Wisconsin River. If the coach gives the go-ahead, head to an outdoor waterpark like Noah’s Art Waterpark, where you can try the new Quadzilla racer slides (remember, no need to be too competitive, as it’s primarily intended as adrenaline-inducing fun). Or go from screaming for the team to screaming on a roller coaster.

Balance your time in the sun with some indoor fun.

In Downtown Dells, you’ll find Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, a place loaded with exhibits that are oddly captivating. Next door is Wizard Quest, a full-size labyrinth adventure in which your goal is to find and free the wizards of the realm. For kids with an artistic streak, maybe siblings who are along to cheer on a brother or sister, there’s Paint It! Pottery Shop, where they can create their own masterpiece. Wild Fun Zone is the place with the big gorilla on the top of the building and bumper cars, mini golf and laser tag inside.

On the Wisconsin Dells Parkway, there’s the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory - Interactive Science Center, with more than 175 interactive exhibits, including a virtual sports center that’s sure to be a hit for obvious reasons. Adjacent to Great Wolf Lodge is MagiQuest, a four-story live action adventure game with players using magic wands - score!

After you’ve worked up an appetite, take the team to one of the two Monk’s Bar & Grill restaurants in Wisconsin Dells for a classic burger the locals love. Other player favorites include Pizza Pub, Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille, and River Walk Pub.

Go team!

Make It A Grown-up Getaway
2011-08-01

While Wisconsin Dells built its reputation on family-friendly offerings, there’s nothing to say you can’t vacation here without the kids. In fact, there’s lots to suggest you should.

For golfers, there are six courses in all and three of them are critically acclaimed championship courses. Wild Rock Golf Club is built around and through a former quarry and Links, Golf Digest and Golf magazines all rated it among the top 10 new courses for 2008. Trappers Turn Golf Club and Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort complete the trio.

Some say golf and spa is a natural twosome. If you agree, rent one of Sundara Inn & Spa’s private villas overlooking the Wild Rock course and make time for a golfer’s massage and a dip in their heated outdoor infinity pool. At Chula Vista Resort, their golf villas also overlook the fairway and are within easy walking distance of the clubhouse. There’s a spa on-premise here too, Spa Del Sol, where the Couples Massage Flame Experience, which uses a flame-warmed essential oil, is the newest addition to their menu of services.

Now that you’re feeling warm on the outside, feel all warm in the inside with some wine tastings. Wollersheim Winery in nearby Prairie du Sac is breathtaking, with steep vineyards overlooking the Wisconsin River and historic buildings making up the estate. French winemaker Philippe Coquard deserves a clink of the glasses for his ability to combine European tradition with Wisconsin’s fickle growing season in the production of distinctive award-winning wines. Fawn Creek Winery in Wisconsin Dells also has a fine selection of wines and a micro menu of olive trays, artisan cheese flights, breads with dipping oils and even Wisconsin microbrews that are just too tempting to pass up.

Let’s stick with microbrews for a moment longer. Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co. serves up 10 hand-crafted beers. Take a peek at their copper-clad barrels, then ask for the brewmaster’s recommendation for a seasonal brew. They also make a mean root beer.

Moving from microbrews to munching, when you’re without the kids you should make dinner out a special occasion. Try one of the area’s well-respected supper clubs.  The Del-Bar has been around since the 1940s and only gets better with age. With its Prairie-style architecture, expansive wine cellar and exquisitely prepared steaks, it’s a special treat. Other places with great ambiance and equally great steaks are Field’s at the Wilderness, House of Embers, Kaminski Bros. Chop House, Ishnala Supper Club and Copper Oak Steak House at Ho-Chunk Gaming, Wisconsin Dells.

Imagine shopping without children in tow. You can linger in jewelry boutiques like Artistic Expression Gift Gallery, selecting from among the works of 150 artists. You can try on outfit after designer outfit at Alpha Beta Karma. You can pick out that piece of artwork that calls to you at places like Holiday House and Cranberry Connections. Better bring along a friend to help carry all the bags.

Gather some energy for a night out. Ho-Chunk Gaming has slots, Black Jack and bingo. Their newest table game is Baccarat. Other nightlife in the Dells comes in other forms too, like comedy or music. For music, the dueling pianos act at Monk’s at the Wilderness is a hoot. And Marley’s – A Taste of the Caribbean turns into a hot-spot dance club at night. One venue that offers both laughs and music acts is Crystal Grand Music Theatre. If you’re in the mood for a nightcap, head to Showboat Saloon, Sand Bar or Zap’s Tap to name a few of the local’s favorites.

Here’s one surprise recommendation for your trip without kids - play at the waterparks. When it’s just the grown-ups, you can ride all the daring slides, float the lazy river as long as you want, and rent a decked-out private poolside cabana at one of the waterpark resorts, like the new Grand Cabana at the Kalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center where you can lounge in your own private 12-foot-long hot tub.

SPRING: Head South for Spring Break2013-04-01If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve been to Wisconsin Dells at least once and an equally good chance that trip was for a summer vacation. Time to broaden your horizons. The community, known affectionately at “The Waterpark Capital of the World!®”, also wants to be known as a four-season destination and they’ve earned that.Read More
SPRING: Head South for Spring Break
2013-04-01

springDon’t let that headline fool you. It does not reference a trip south to the ocean for spring break - leave that to the college co-eds. What it does reference are the many families from neighboring states like Minnesota with grade school-age children who take the very-manageable drive to Wisconsin Dells for their spring break getaway. Like the Hadden family. Mom Renee, dad Scott and daughters Ashley and Amanda hail from Victoria, Minnesota. They own a condominium at the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort so they make a few trips to the Dells each year. Some years that includes a getaway during spring break week.

“We’ve been coming to the Dells as a family since 1998, and we try to stay at least three days when we come because two days just isn’t enough” said Renee. They often vacation with other families whose children are classmates of the girls. Renee mentioned that she’s heard those families call it their “staycation.”

Ashley and Amanda are straight A students involved in lots of activities, so life around the Hadden household is very busy. “Going to the Dells gives us the time together that we need and gives us a chance to just unwind. What we like about going to the Dells is that we don't have to bother with the airplane, rental car, and all the stresses that go along with traveling farther away. It's easy, you never run out of things to do, and the kids love going there!” offered Renee.

The family also shared how much they liked the indoor waterpark with the dome at the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort. “Being able to get some color and the smell of suntan lotion makes you feel like you’re in Florida,” said Renee.

But it’s not all waterparks all the time when they’re vacationing. They go to the Rick Wilcox Magic Theater and Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co. is their favorite restaurant.

Regardless of the direction visitors are coming from, they can take a cue from the Haddens and take advantage of all the attractions open year-round in the Dells. Indoor amusement parks including Knuckleheads Bowling & Indoor Amusement Park, Chalet Lanes & Lounge and Kalahari Indoor Theme Park offer bowling at its finest. At Wild Fun Zone, there’s laser tag downstairs, bumper cars on the main floor and mini golf plus Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Parks indoor park boasts bumper cars and the "Opa" indoor roller coaster.

If you want the kids to maintain some cerebral activity during their break from the classroom, there’s the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory - Interactive Science Center with some 150 interactive stations offering experiences tied to music, robotics, holograms, space and scientific wonders of the world. There’s even a virtual sports center where kids can jump in to an extreme sports experience through a computer-created environment. For those into wizard-questing adventures, there are two full-size games in town - Wizard Quest downtown and MagiQuest at Great Wolf Lodge.

One final thought on spring break: Those tween and teen years, while plenty challenging at times, go by in a heartbeat. Just ask any parent with college-age children. Which is all the more reason to carve out spring break vacation time while they still want to travel with mom and dad.

Choosing “Best Of” Food Finds is Delicious Duty
2012-08-16

monksWhen you have more than 100 restaurants, confectionaries and specialty food stores to choose from, as you do in Wisconsin Dells, the process can be incredibly satisfying.

Setting out to catalogue some of the “best of” food finds in the Dells was no small task. Locals have their favorites and proved a good starting point for recommendations. Sheer traffic to eateries was another tip-off. Of course, the ultimate critique comes in the taste. Here is a sampling - it’s by no means an exhaustive list, as that would require a book - to help guide your culinary decisions the next time you’re visiting Wisconsin Dells.

Best of Cheese
It’s Wisconsin, so we had no choice but to start the list with cheese.

  • For fresh cheese curds in all their squeaky goodness, shop Market Square Cheese. For the deep-fried variety, the Sand Bar's version goes great with their homemade hot tomato relish.
  • Best grilled cheese sandwich goes to the Cheese Factory Restaurant - it was named one of the Top 5 in the country by celebrity chef Rachel Ray.
  • Best mac and cheese for grown-ups can be found at High Rock Café - they call their rich and creamy entrée Big Kid Mac & Cheese and you can even customize the spiciness of this traditional favorite.

Best Burger

The undisputed winner here is the Original Monk’s Burger at the classic Monk’s Bar & Grill in downtown Dells. This is the burger that started it all, or so it says on the menu. It’s a fresh patty simmered on the seasoned grill. The grill is right at the front of the joint with the aromas piped outside - the original owner called it “aroma marketing.”

Best Ribs

House of Embers claims honors in this category. In 1959, Wally Obois decided his new restaurant would be famous for hickory smoked BBQ ribs. And so it came to be. Today his son Mike uses the same technique to make these deliciously tender ribs using a specially designed smoke house and a secret BBQ sauce. And they are.

Best Friday Night Fish Fry

  • For atmosphere and food, the Friday Night fish fry at River’s Edge Pub & Grub can’t be beat - the cod is broasted and the dining room features a 4,000-gallon aquarium filled with local fish.
  • Also in contention - the classic Wisconsin fish fry offering at Italian restaurant Sarento’s Restaurant, of all places, and the fish plate at Ravina Bay Bar & Grill, which pairs well with their homemade clam chowder.

Best Deep Dish Pizza

  • In its menu description, Uno Chicago Grill claims to have invented deep dish pizza. We don’t know about that, but there’s no arguing their pizza, with dough made fresh every day, is delicious. The Wisconsin Dells restaurant is owned by husband/wife team of Mike and Laura Nate.
  • Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille, Pizza Ranch of Wisconsin Dells, Pizza Villa and Pizza Pub are shoo-ins in the broader pizza category.

Best Steaks

Wisconsin Dells is known for its quintessential Wisconsin supper clubs and at these supper clubs you’ll find the most delicious steaks around. In this category, you won’t go wrong making reservations at Field’s at the Wilderness, Ishnala Supper Club, Del-Bar, Kaminski Bros. Chop House, Copper Oak Steak House or House of Embers.

Best Sweet Treats

  • For donuts, the Paul Bunyan’s Northwoods Cook Shanty variety served at breakfast and in their bakery is legendary. Holiday Shores Camp-Resort makes theirs homemade and their guests always line up at the counter before the first donuts come out of the fryer.
  • For desserts, the list is a mile long, but you should, at least once in your life, try any flavor of homemade cheesecake at the CheeseCake Heaven Deli Restaurant, the to-die-for dessert bars at River Moon Café, artisian cakes at the Cheese Factory Restaurant, or a one-of-a-kind flavor creation at Cold Stone Cremery.
  • For homemade fudge, it’s a tie between Swiss Maid Fudge and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge, both celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2012.

Wisconsin Cranberry Confections

Did you know Wisconsin is the nation’s largest producer of cranberries? For that reason alone we were compelled to make this a category onto itself. And the winner is Cranberry Connections, where you can indulge in five flavors of cranberry ice cream, all made at a small dairy right in state, cranberry raspberry salt water taffy, white craisin pretzel bark and their #1 seller, craisin cashew crunch. The candy looks especially pretty when served in one of their collectible cranberry glass bowls.
