Take the children to see the giant Glockenspiel with a musical re-enactment of the legendary Pied Piper of Hamelin every half-hour, on the hour. The legend goes that the Pied Piper rid the town of Hamelin of its rats and mice by charming them away with his flute playing. When the citizens of Hamelin refused to pay the piper the price they had agreed upon, he charmed away their children in revenge.

The German Glockenspiel with its fairy tale re-enactment is FREE making it one of the best Wisconsin Dells deals. It's located in the 400 block of Broadway, Downtown Wisconsin Dells.

    Get Up And Go
    04/01/2010

Wisconsin invented tailgating in 20-below weather at Packer football games, the "Jump Around" tradition at University of Wisconsin-Madison Badger home games, and Sausage Races at Brewers baseball games. With that kind of gusto for watching sports, it's no wonder that hosting amateur sports events would become all the rage around the state too. The Dells had a leg up on the competition in that arena, parlaying its popularity as a family vacation spot to grow its fan base for tournaments in Wisconsin Dells.

    JustAGame FieldhouseJustAGame Fieldhouse

A few years back, the JustAGame Fieldhouse was built as a place for area teams to get some extra court time and a new venue for tournament organizers to consider. Coaches liked the facility, especially the wood floor, and parents and kids loved the location in the Dells. It didn't take long for the Fieldhouse to fill its schedule with basketball, wrestling, gymnastics and Wisconsin Dells volleyball tournaments. At last count, owners Dave and Joy Royston estimate they're now hosting about 70 per year. They keep busy coordinating the events, and playing tour guide too. "We get lots of questions from teams about what to do when they're in town and we're happy to give them lots of suggestions," said Dave.

Then came the Wisconsin Dells Center at Chula Vista Resort, a huge sports facility under a bubble, ideal for volleyball, gymnastics, indoor soccer and more. They're so serious about what they do they even bought an entire field's worth of artificial turf from the Indianapolis Colts. Again, Wisconsin Dells sports tournaments began pouring in, as did players and families from all over the country.

In the meantime, the Poppy Waterman Ice Arena started bringing in its share of Wisconsin Dells hockey tournaments and figure skating competitions, both a big deal in northern climates.

OutdoorsOutdoors, a number of parks and the local high school fields support youth softball and baseball tournaments. In fact, Game Day USA will be returning to the Dells for another schedule of games this summer. There's also a formerly private resort that's now open to the public - Perlstein Resort and Conference Center that's a veritable sports core with tennis courts, volleyball courts, soccer field and baseball field.

The lesson in all of this? For parents whose kids are in sports, you know that attending a sports tournament is your family vacation. This is a good way to make the most of it.

What to Do When Youth Sports Rules Your Life
    06/24/2010

See if this sounds familiar.  Your calendar is littered with volleyball practices, soccer games, sports camps, tournaments, more practices and more tournaments, and that’s just one month.  Your laundry room is impassable due to a mound of jerseys, warm-ups and sports gear that only grows larger by the week.  And your psyche could benefit from a family vacation pronto.  This is the world of parents whose kids are big into sports.  There are fringes though - traveling to different places, meeting and making new friends, and cheering on your children.  And when that can all happen in a city setting that also doubles as a vacation setting, well, life is grand.  Score one for the Dells on that front.

The town known for waterparks, and tons of other Wisconsin Dells attractions too, decided it wanted to get into youth sports.  Good call coach.  After all, it had the necessary lodging - 8,000+ hotel rooms.  And amenities and activities and family-friendly restaurants.  Now it just needed sports facilities.  Local business owners got to work, building fieldhouses and sports fields that would appeal to today’s young athletes.  The game plan worked.

Today, teams from all over the country make their way here for Wisconsin Dells basketball tournaments at JustAgame Fieldhouse; volleyball camps at the Wisconsin Dells Center at Chula Vista Resort, a bubble covered facility; baseball games at the newly renovated Rotary Park; and hockey showdowns at the Poppy Waterman Ice Arena.

Is your kid into martial arts?  The Dells hosts martial arts events.  How about cheerleading or football or soccer or wrestling or gymnastics?  Check to all of the above.  There are golf courses and tennis courts, running tracks and bowling alleys.

Down time between games can be a real downer when there’s nothing to do.  Not a worry in Wisconsin Dells.  Wisconsin Dells attractions that appeal to the competitive side of kids without wearing them out too much include a rousing round of mini-golf or a few frames of bowling, followed by a technology-enhanced adventure game at places with names like Wizard Quest and MagiQuest.  Coaches typically give their players permission to explore the Wisconsin Dells waterparks once practice wraps up for the day, and by then tweens and teens can’t wait to try out the waterslides, water roller coasters and funnel tube rides.

Knowing kids influence adults’ buying decisions, you can bet coaches are getting an earful these days from players begging them to sign up for that next tournament in Wisconsin Dells.  Score one for the kids.

    Traveling Teams Dig the Dells
    08/01/2011

For a community that’s been known forever as a family vacation destination, the local business owners here put together a smart game plan when they decided to get into youth sports. They already had all the Wisconsin Dells attractions and amenities families love, like the world famous Wisconsin Dells water parks, casual restaurants that were pros at catering to big groups, indoor and outdoor attractions and some 8,000 hotel rooms ranging from budget-friendly to expansive condominium units. What they needed were places for players to play.

So they built a number of indoor Wisconsin Dells sports facilities, most prominent among them the JustAgame Fieldhouse, the Wisconsin Dells Center at Chula Vista Resort and the Poppy Waterman Ice Arena. They didn’t stop there. They improved their outdoor sports fields at Rotary Park, Veterans’ Park and Kaminski Park. Next step was to invite coaches to take a look and it wasn’t long before tournament schedules started filling up.

These days, on any given Dells weekend, it’s not unusual to find players from all over the country in town for a tournament - basketball, volleyball, football, soccer, track, wrestling, hockey or baseball.  The largest gathering of youth athletes happens in May and June when the Wisconsin Dells Center hosts upwards of 3,600 players for their annual “The Classic” volleyball tournament.

Play On In Wisconsin Dells01/02/2012If you're among the myriad of parents and families in town for youth sports tournaments, we have a stong hunch you'll be looking for things to do between the games. And boy oh boy, do we have some super recommendations for you!Read More
    Play On In Wisconsin Dells
    01/02/2012

The Dells is quickly becoming a sports mecca for youth tournaments, events and camps, and the 2012 warm weather season stands to be the best ever, with basketball, softball and volleyball filling up the calendar. For filling down time between games may we suggest some non-competitive activities. Then fill up on good eats to keep those energy levels high.

Start outdoors - the fresh air will do you good - with a Duck tour of the Wisconsin River. If the coach gives the go-ahead, head to an outdoor waterpark like Noah’s Art Waterpark, where you can try the new Quadzilla racer slides (remember, no need to be too competitive, as it’s primarily intended as adrenaline-inducing fun). Or go from screaming for the team to screaming on a roller coaster.

Balance your time in the sun with some indoor fun.

In Downtown Dells, you’ll find Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, a place loaded with exhibits that are oddly captivating. Next door is Wizard Quest, a full-size labyrinth adventure in which your goal is to find and free the wizards of the realm. For kids with an artistic streak, maybe siblings who are along to cheer on a brother or sister, there’s Paint It! Pottery Shop, where they can create their own masterpiece. Wild Fun Zone is the place with the big gorilla on the top of the building and bumper cars, mini golf and laser tag inside.

On the Wisconsin Dells Parkway, there’s the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory - Interactive Science Center, with more than 175 interactive exhibits, including a virtual sports center that’s sure to be a hit for obvious reasons. Adjacent to Great Wolf Lodge is MagiQuest, a four-story live action adventure game with players using magic wands - score!

After you’ve worked up an appetite, take the team to one of the two Monk’s Bar & Grill restaurants in Wisconsin Dells for a classic burger the locals love. Other player favorites include Pizza Pub, Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co., Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille, and River Walk Pub.

    Go team!
