Outdoor adventures that will test the spirit of even the most stalwart heroes. Ride Zeus’ own collection of roller coasters, including the Hades. With the world’s longest underground tunnel, it will plunge you into a mythic underworld that will terrify and delight. For wiser mortals, go-kart tracks will tempt with twists and turns through underwater tunnels and even into the belly of the Trojan horse.

Outdoor Water Park.
An outdoor realm with water slides and rides of all shapes, sizes and speeds. Dare you face Poseidon’s Rage, whose awesome force comes in the world’s tallest waves -- over 9 feet! But fear not: the outdoor water park also offers interactive pools for the young and an enchanting Endless River to refresh the weary.

    chula-vista-indoor-water-park-wi-dellsChula Vista Resort

Perched on the bluffs towering above the Wisconsin River, this resort has undergone a magical transformation over the past few years. New condos, golf course villas, an upscale steakhouse and an incredibly themed indoor water park -- Lost Rios. Inside this 80,000 square-foot Aztec paradise, you can race each other on the Matador Mat Racers or hang out in Mount Montezuma's giant rain forest. Not to be missed is the Flyan Myan Zip Coaster, the world's fastest and longest indoor water roller coaster.

    great-wolf-indoor-waterparks-wi-dellsGreat Wolf Lodge

Great Wolf Lodge combines the rustic charm of a Northwoods lodge with the amenities you'd expect at a top-notch resort, with loads of dryland activities geared toward younger children too. Head to the resort's indoor water parks -- there are three of them, measuring a mammoth 100,000 square feet -- and there you'll find a range of rides that are family-pleasing. For the older kids and daredevil adults, the Howlin Tornado, a six-story high extreme tube ride, is the centerpiece. For the young ones, a four-story treehouse waterfort is irresistible.

    kalahari-wisconsin-dells-indoor-waterparksKalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center

This resort is distinguished by its authentic African art, a live animal exhibit with tiger cubs and baby kangaroos, and some of the largest freestanding condominiums in the area that include five bedrooms, four bathrooms, billiard room and theater room. But it's the indoor surf machine known as the FlowRider® that has made this place famous. Stand-up surf or boogie board on this ride, with 50,000 gallons of water flowing under you each minute to create a five-foot ocean-like wave. A close second in talk value is their Master Blaster uphill water roller coaster. This indoor water park comes in at a whopping 125,000 square feet.

    wilderness-resort-wi-dells-indoor-water-parksWilderness Hotel & Golf Resort

Bigger is better here, no doubt about it. The Wilderness Resort is America's largest indoor/outdoor combination water park resort, with three massive indoor water parks totaling 250,000 square feet and another three outdoor to match. Guests tan year-round in the Wild WaterDome with its see-through roof, when they're not in family-raft racing rides or bobbing in the country's largest indoor wave pool that is. Klondike Kavern is famous for its lazy river and Hurricane water raft ride. Wild West Waterpark is fun for all ages and features the Fantastic Voyage family raft ride.

mt-olympus-indoor-water-parksMt. Olympus Water & Theme Parks

While this hotel and theme park complex has a decidedly Greek theme going, the indoor water park draws on an eclectic mix of imagery to get the fun started. Towering tube slides named for killer snakes like Cobra, Diamondback, Anaconda and Boa; a Mayan raging river; a pirate ship complete with tattered sails, tunnels and water slides for the little ones; and a jungle water walk are the most popular attractions here.

Of course, these handful of water parks are just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. The nice thing about Wisconsin Dells is that, if you prefer cozier surroundings in a water park, they've got that too. So you choose - big, small, something in between, or all of the above.

Waterpark Essentials: Must-Haves To Make The Most Of Your Day In The Dells
    05/15/2010

dells-water-park-must-haves-55Pack Light — Leave valuables at home. If you're wearing your swimsuit, pack dry clothes for the ride home.

Parking Location — Write down where you parked your car and tuck the note inside your beach bag. With so much fun to think about, this would be an easy one to forget.

Sunscreen — When you're running around having a ball, it's easy to ignore the effects of the sun. Apply waterproof sunscreen generously and often. Remember, this applies to a lot of indoor waterparks, too!

Footwear — With literally acres of waterslides to experience, your feet will be on the move. Swim socks are a good investment, because you can keep them on during the rides. Or bring along flip flops that can be stowed in special shelving units set up at the base of most rides.

Sun Glasses with Strap — Give your eyes a break. Sun reflecting off water makes sun glasses more than merely a fashion statement. They're great for people watching too.

Swimsuits, Cover-ups, Towels — No directions required.

Quarters — Handy storage lockers for all your other essentials are plentiful. All they require are a few quarters. Nice value!

Extra Set of Car Keys — After a long day of fun, no one wants to find they've misplaced their car keys.

    Family Playtime After Dark
    06/28/2010

wisconsin-dells-mini-golf-84When families vacation in Wisconsin Dells, believe us when we say they work hard to squeeze every minute of fun out of their getaway.  And that often includes hitting activities and Wisconsin Dells attractions after dark.

Stroll downtown Wisconsin Dells on a summer evening and you’ll find families ducking into fudge and candy shops for a late night treat, then lingering on benches to let the chocolate-y goodness melt in their mouths. Stores up and down Broadway keep their lights on so shoppers can pick up a Dells hoodie or a new swim suit to debut the next day at one of the many Wisconsin Dells water parks.  And there’s nothing like mini-golfing in the Dells under the lights at places like Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf, Timber Falls Adventure Park. Or, plan on a keepsake photo from Old Abe’s Old Time Portraits or Professor Porter’s Old Time Portraits.

big-sky-drive-in-dells-84What’s a classic night of fun without a drive-in movie?  Yes, there’s still such a thing in the Dells - at the Big Sky Twin Drive-In Theater.   Haunted houses seem to be scarier after dark, which makes the Ghost Out-Post Haunted House a family favorite when the moon comes out.

There’s evening entertainment for those who prefer late night over matinee, like the Tommy Bartlett Show of water skiers on Lake Delton and the Rick Wilcox Magic Theater magic show.

Kalahari WI DellsThe Dells' indoor amusement parks keep their lights on late for visitors as well.  Topping the list of family favorite Wisconsin Dells attractions are businesses like the massive Kalahari Indoor Theme Park, the laser bowling mecca known as Knuckleheads Bowling & Indoor Amusement Park and the Downtown Dells Wild Fun Zone.

So forget curfews when you’re in Wisconsin Dells.  And don’t bother with a wake-up call the next morning either.  After all, you’re on vacation.

Mt-Olympus-Wisconsin-Dells-rollercoaster-91Watch a video of Bert the Conqueror from the Travel Channel riding Hades, a roller coaster at Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Parks, Wisconsin Dells.

Hades is a record-breaking extreme wooden roller coaster with a 65-degree drop, the world’s longest underground tunnel and the rush of reaching speeds up to 70 mph. Hang on for dear life as you scale the 160' heights of Hades, then scream all the way to the bottom of the first 140' drop, make a 90 degree turn underground in complete darkness, blast out of the ground, just to dip and spin around to do it all over again.

indoor-water-parks-wi-dells-99Wisconsin Dells Indoor & Outdoor Water Parks

Some families just seem to have the adrenaline gene.  You know the type.  They’re happiest when every second is filled with adventure, intrigue, exploration and fun.  And that just covers plans for the morning.  If you’re one of those, Wisconsin Dells applauds your energy and zest for life.  In fact, you’ll feel right at home in this, “The Waterpark Capital of the World!®”, given many of the attractions here sprung up with family fun in mind.  Plan for at least a few days to get to everything on your list, knowing there will be plenty of time to sleep later.

Let’s commence with a lodging choice.  Of course there are great water park resorts.  The area has small, medium, large and gargantuan-sized water park resorts, so it’s your choice.  If you like the option of indoor and outdoor water parks, then consider one of the five largest - the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort, the Kalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center, Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Parks, Chula Vista Resort or Great Wolf Lodge.  The number of rides, slides, tube funnels and watercoasters your family can play on is staggering.  The surf machine at Kalahari is enough to keep tweens and teens occupied for hours at a time as they try to catch a wave indoors.  At the Wilderness Resort, the place is so sprawling they have shuttles to take you from one water park to the next on the property.  Their new zip line gives you a lay of the land from the air as you glide above the tree tops.  Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Parks' outdoor water park includes a surf pool with nine-foot waves and a sandy beach and six side-by-side racing slides. Their indoor water park includes towering tube slides and endless river. Chula Vista Resort has an outdoor water park overlooking the Wisconsin River, a second outdoor water park on the other side of the property, and an indoor water park that you access via an underground tunnel.  Very cool.  Great Wolf Lodge has built its stock in trade with the younger kids and has themed their place to the hilt.

    outdoor-theme-parks-wi-dells-99America's Largest Outdoor Water Park

If you plan to visit Wisconsin Dells during the warm weather months, you could stay at your favorite hotel or motel, and then head out first thing in the morning to spend the day at Noah’s Ark Waterpark, the country’s largest outdoor water park.  Noah’s Ark has the extremes, with the family friendly Tadpole Bay at one end of the spectrum and the new Scorpion’s Tail loop-de-loop extreme tube slide for bigger kids and adults at the other end.  Bring comfortable aqua shoes as you and your family will be covering 70 acres in your quest to try all 80 rides, slides and activities at Noah’s.

    indoor-theme-parks-dells-99Indoor Wisconsin Dells Amusement Parks

When you’ve logged sufficient hours at the water parks, dry off the kids and head to the indoor amusement parks.  Kalahari Indoor Theme Park has a six-story high Ferris wheel, multi-level go-kart track, laser tag, 24 lanes of bowling, a ton of arcade games, a ropes course, climbing wall and mini-golf.  Let’s all pause to catch our breath.  Knuckleheads Bowling & Indoor Amusement Park also has two dozen lanes of bowling, a 4D theatre ride, bumper cars and go-karts, plus you can grab dinner next door at Buffalo Phil’s Pizza & Grille, where their three secret-recipe BBQ sauces, made and bottled on premise, making family dining there triple the fun.

    outdoor-theme-parks-wi-dells-99Outdoor Dells Amusement Parks

There are outdoor amusement parks that are must-stops for families who crave fun and exhilaration.  Timber Falls Adventure Park has a roller coaster called the Hellcat that features 70-degree banks and 10-story drops and is a favorite among roller coaster fan clubs.  You’ll get some air on the coaster, and even more air on their end-over-end ride called the Skyscraper.  It pulls 4 Gs at 60 mph 160 feet off the ground.

    mini-golf-wisconsin-dells-99Mini-Golf In Wisconsin Dells

Time to move on to mini-golf.  Actually, you can stay put at Timber Falls and golf 72 holes, all in the shade of tall pines along the Wisconsin River.  There’s also Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf.

    wi-dells-go-karts-99Dells Go-Kart Tracks

Large outdoor go-kart tracks are a favorite for families who like a little competition with their fun.  ADare Go Carts is everything you’d expect from a good track - hairpin turns, fast straightaways and racing through waterfalls (this is Wisconsin Dells, after all.)

jet-boats-wi-river-99Jet Boats On The Wisconsin River

Right about now you may be looking to cool off a little.  Take a jet boat ride on the Wisconsin River and you’ll cool off a lot, as in get soaked while the wind is whipping through your hair.  These rides are a blast, from the first 360-degree turn to the last, all under the power of a 1,200 hp engine.  There are two companies offering this option - Jet Boat Adventures and WildThing Jet Boats.

    wi-dells-live-entertainment-99Dells Live Entertainment

End the day with some family entertainment that plays with your senses - Dells 4D Special FX Theater is a good choice, as is the Rick Wilcox Magic Theater - and then a great burger at Monk’s Bar & Grill, either the original restaurant downtown or the expanded version at the Wilderness Resort.

There, that should be enough family fun and adventure for one Wisconsin Dells getaway.
