Could This Be The Next French Riviera?
    04/01/2010

There's no denying the Dells is "kid central." Families, extended families, family reunion groups, groups of friends with children in tow -- you get the picture -- have made the Dells their preferred vacation hangout. So could the rumblings be true, that Wisconsin Dells has an alter ego that is high-end and geared towards grown-ups? Here's how the evidence stacks up.

    Luxury Wisconsin Dells Resorts

    Luxury Digs

Sure, the water park resorts are grand, but try a golf villa at Chula Vista Resort or a private adults-only spa villa at Sundara Inn & Spa, and you'll know you've arrived. These are so sophisticated and so richly appointed, you probably won't want to leave.

Wollersheim Winery - Dells Area WineriesFINE WINE

Not everyone can afford to hop a plane to Italy, or France, or Napa Valley for that matter to indulge their taste for fine wine. But certainly a trip to Prairie du Sac, just a half-hour drive from the Dells, should be manageable. There you'll find the Wollersheim Winery in all its historic splendor. Originally established in the 1840s by Hungarian Count Agoston Haraszthy no less, and nestled in the hills overlooking the Wisconsin River valley, this property features buildings with incredible character, outdoor seating with views to the vineyard, lovely gardens and a new tasting room. There's a new winery in Wisconsin Dells too - it's called Fawn Creek Winery. Or, if you prefer your wine served with a fine meal, ask to see the wine list at Field's at the Wilderness or the Del-Bar. Both restaurants in Wisconsin Dells were designed by a protégé of Frank Lloyd Wright, and both have graced the pages of Wine Spectator Magazine.

Wisconsin Dells Spas - Spa SerenityIndulgent Spa Services

Celebrities insist on it and so must you. It's a spa service to soothe those jangled nerves and make your skin glow. At Spa Serenity (don't you just love the name!), go for the "A Night Out Facial." At Sundara Inn & Spa, the Slimming Body Wrap and Bath Salt treatment seems like something a starlet would have before walking the red carpet. Even if you're vacationing at Wisconsin Dells water park hotels like Chula Vista, the Wilderness or Kalahari, sneak away to their on-site spa for a little pampering that's good for you.

Alpha Beta Karma - Wisconsin DellsDesigner Shopping

Fashionistas never eschew style simply because they're on vacation.  In fact, it's quite the contrary - they're on the look-out for on-trend finds they won't find closer to home.  The Wisconsin Dells shopping itinerary for any self-respecting fashionista must include stops at Artistic Expressions Gift Gallery for artisan jewelry and textiles, Affordable Leather and More for a new handbag, Alpha Beta Karma for designer fashion straight from east and west coast designers and Cranberry Connections for scarves and totes to complete the outfit.

    Dells Golf CoursesChampionship Golf

It's almost unimaginable that a community of just 20 square miles could have three championship golf courses. Yet, it does. Reserve a tee time at Wild Rock Golf Club, Trappers Turn Golf Club, Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort or all three and then golf to your heart's content.

How To Reserve Wisconsin Dells Lodging
    07/01/2010

The Wisconsin Dells Visitor & Convention Bureau is pleased to share the following reservation hints and tips. We thank you for visiting the Wisconsin Dells area and hope that your stay is truly memorable.

    Research Your Options

For Wisconsin Dells lodging that best meet your travel requirements and budget, you may wish to spend some time researching the available options. Here are a few research tips:

    • Request a Wisconsin Dells Vacation Guide® by contacting us at (800) 223-3557, via e-mail, or go to our online version, to familiarize yourself with the area and lodging options
    • Plan your arrival and departure dates
    • Compare extras that may be important to you like indoor and/or outdoor waterpark features or pools, refrigerator, hair dryer, iron, workout room, on-site restaurant, movie rental, wheelchair accessibility, pet-friendly accommodations and more
    • Identify two or three properties that appeal to you and your family

    Room Rates

Select a property that meets your budget. Accommodation rates vary, especially on weekends, holidays and for special events. Multiple night stays may also be required on weekends, holidays and during peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day). Please note that most rates are subject to change without notice and are subject to state and local taxes.

    Reservations

After you’ve decided what type of Wisconsin Dells lodging or accommodation that meets your needs, you should make a reservation. The following steps may be useful in your reservation process:

    • Know the dates you want to travel
    • Verify the rate
    • If you have any discount coupons, special certificates or group rate, please provide the information to the reservationist
    • Have a valid credit card ready
    • Verify check in/out times as it varies for each property

    Confirmations

When a reservation is made, most properties assign a confirmation number. Ask for a letter of confirmation to be mailed to you that notes the rate, length of stay and any special requests. It may also be helpful to call in advance and re-confirm your reservation.

    Deposits/Cancellations

A valid credit card and/or deposit may be required to guarantee your reservation. Ask if an advance deposit is required and for what amount.

Cancellation policies also vary from one property to the next and a cancellation fee may apply. Please ask the property for their cancellation policy when you make your reservation. If you need to cancel a reservation, be sure to ask for a cancellation number and the name of the person that you spoke with.

    Special Requests

If you have any special requests (i.e. pets, handicap room, rollaway, crib), ask the property when you make your reservation if they can accommodate you. There may be an additional charge for your request. Please keep in mind that pet policies do vary for each property and properties do reserve the right to refuse special services.

    Contact Us

Please do not hesitate to contact us directly with any additional questions or to seek input on potential Wisconsin Dells options. Our knowledgeable Visitor Services staff stands ready to assist you at (800)  223-3557 or by e-mail at info@wisdells.com.

    Make It A Grown-up Getaway
    08/01/2011

While Wisconsin Dells built its reputation on family-friendly offerings, there’s nothing to say you can’t vacation here without the kids. In fact, there’s lots to suggest you should.

For golfers, there are six courses in all and three of them are critically acclaimed championship courses. Wild Rock Golf Club is built around and through a former quarry and Links, Golf Digest and Golf magazines all rated it among the top 10 new courses for 2008. Trappers Turn Golf Club and Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort complete the trio.

Some say golf and spa is a natural twosome. If you agree, rent one of Sundara Inn & Spa’s private villas overlooking the Wild Rock course and make time for a golfer’s massage and a dip in their heated outdoor infinity pool. At Chula Vista Resort, their golf villas also overlook the fairway and are within easy walking distance of the clubhouse. There’s a spa on-premise here too, Spa Del Sol, where the Couples Massage Flame Experience, which uses a flame-warmed essential oil, is the newest addition to their menu of services.

Now that you’re feeling warm on the outside, feel all warm in the inside with some wine tastings. Wollersheim Winery in nearby Prairie du Sac is breathtaking, with steep vineyards overlooking the Wisconsin River and historic buildings making up the estate. French winemaker Philippe Coquard deserves a clink of the glasses for his ability to combine European tradition with Wisconsin’s fickle growing season in the production of distinctive award-winning wines. Fawn Creek Winery in Wisconsin Dells also has a fine selection of wines and a micro menu of olive trays, artisan cheese flights, breads with dipping oils and even Wisconsin microbrews that are just too tempting to pass up.

Let’s stick with microbrews for a moment longer. Moosejaw Pizza & Dells Brewing Co. serves up 10 hand-crafted beers. Take a peek at their copper-clad barrels, then ask for the brewmaster’s recommendation for a seasonal brew. They also make a mean root beer.

Moving from microbrews to munching, when you’re without the kids you should make dinner out a special occasion. Try one of the area’s well-respected supper clubs.  The Del-Bar has been around since the 1940s and only gets better with age. With its Prairie-style architecture, expansive wine cellar and exquisitely prepared steaks, it’s a special treat. Other places with great ambiance and equally great steaks are Field’s at the Wilderness, House of Embers, Kaminski Bros. Chop House, Ishnala Supper Club and Copper Oak Steak House at Ho-Chunk Gaming, Wisconsin Dells.

Imagine shopping without children in tow. You can linger in jewelry boutiques like Artistic Expression Gift Gallery, selecting from among the works of 150 artists. You can try on outfit after designer outfit at Alpha Beta Karma. You can pick out that piece of artwork that calls to you at places like Holiday House and Cranberry Connections. Better bring along a friend to help carry all the bags.

Gather some energy for a night out. Ho-Chunk Gaming has slots, Black Jack and bingo. Their newest table game is Baccarat. Other nightlife in the Dells comes in other forms too, like comedy or music. For music, the dueling pianos act at Monk’s at the Wilderness is a hoot. And Marley’s – A Taste of the Caribbean turns into a hot-spot dance club at night. One venue that offers both laughs and music acts is Crystal Grand Music Theatre. If you’re in the mood for a nightcap, head to Showboat Saloon, Sand Bar or Zap’s Tap to name a few of the local’s favorites.

Here’s one surprise recommendation for your trip without kids - play at the waterparks. When it’s just the grown-ups, you can ride all the daring slides, float the lazy river as long as you want, and rent a decked-out private poolside cabana at one of the waterpark resorts, like the new Grand Cabana at the Kalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center where you can lounge in your own private 12-foot-long hot tub.
