Some grew up together, attending the same grade school and high school. For many, it’s the same story for their kids. A close-knit group, these waterpark and attraction owners in Wisconsin Dells. They’re plucky businesspeople who have somehow found a way to balance the fiercely competitive nature of their work with family and a commitment to the community. We posed the same question to a number of business owners, and thought you’d like to hear how they feel about their work.
Question: Some national destinations are run by large corporations, but here in Wisconsin Dells, families have built this community. What is it about the combination of family connections and entrepreneurial spirit that has made Wisconsin Dells so special?
Here are excerpts from their responses:
“My grandfather was one of the area’s first local businessmen to organize sightseeing boat tours along the Wisconsin River. Years later my mother and her brother took over the family business from my grandfather. Having such successful predecessors instilled a sense of entrepreneurial spirit in me. It was only natural for me and my cousins to work in the family business, doing everything from scooping ice cream to piloting boats. I bought my first hotel when I was 28. Through all of it, I’ve learned the value of hard work and customer service and, most of all, the importance of carrying a family’s legacy.”
Tom Lucke, Owner, Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort
“Every day, my brother Dan and I are involved in the daily operations of the waterpark. Outsiders are generally surprised to see us covered in dirt during construction season, and behind the counter restocking cotton candy during the summer. People ask, ‘Is it worth it?’ I can honestly say it is and we love what we do. As parents of small children, we are trying to instill in them a strong work ethic and values.”
Tim Gantz, Owner, Noah’s Ark Waterpark
“I have lived my whole life in Wisconsin Dells and have been very fortunate to be part of the area’s transformation to ‘The Waterpark Capital of the World!®’ I’m extremely proud that my whole family is involved in bringing our waterpark experience to travelers and businesspeople every day. We wouldn’t trade what we do for anything.”
Todd Nelson, Owner Kalahari Waterpark Resort & Convention Center
"I have spent my entire life in Wisconsin Dells and have watched it transform from a summer destination to ‘The Waterpark Capital of the World!®’ Our family has been catering to travelers for more than 100 years and this area really does it better than any other community. I can't imagine any greater thrill than to have built a business with my grandparents, my parents and my brother. The real reason this area is successful is the spirit of the business owners here - they are just like me - this place is their life."
Mike Kaminski, Owner, Chula Vista Resort
