What would you consider the essential makings for a dreamy destination wedding? Water. Hotels with panache. Experienced wedding planners. Banquet rooms with modern amenities. Restaurants and attractions with plenty of personality. Fun activities to keep everyone happy as a clam. Guess what? Seems the Dells is delivering on that list to the tune of 600+ destination weddings per year and growing.
Before there were destination weddings in the Dells, there was the destination, "The Waterpark Capital of the World!" The waterpark resorts here are known the world over for their fabulous indoor and outdoor water playlands just overflowing with extreme slides and water roller coasters. With all that fabulous fun just waiting to be experienced, the waterpark resorts started doing a bang-up business with birthdays. And family reunions. And anniversaries. There was a certain inevitability that couples would soon be scoping out the community for weddings.
Dells business owners responded by tapping into their romantic sides. Facilities for wedding ceremonies and receptions were built. Local caterers expanded their menus. Even the famous amphibious tour vehicles known as "Ducks" got into the act, shuttling wedding parties around town.
The Dells has spas for pampering the bridal party. Golf courses for couples outings. Restaurants from casual to chic for rehearsal dinners.
For a pretty ceremony setting, there's Coldwater Canyon Pavilion on the Wisconsin River. Bride, groom and guests are transported to this location by a tour boat and, after the ceremony, can enjoy the views with a candlelight dinner. There's also White Rose Inns, with its pretty little wedding venue providing panoramic views of the river. For a taste of Vegas, you can't beat the Dells Bells Wedding Chapel right downtown. Local churches are also delighted to host happy couples.
The list of Wisconsin wedding venues in the Dells is filled with great options and, along with the large and mid-range Wisconsin Dells hotels, includes shoreline cabin resorts on Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River, many of which have a nicely established wedding business. Don't forget golf course club houses and local parks either.
Should the wedding couple choose to steal away on the night of the wedding for a "mini-moon" - the mini-honeymoon before the big trip - they might want to stay in a private golf course villa or a condominium on Lake Delton. An especially intriguing option would be to book the Seth Peterson Cottage on Mirror Lake, a Frank Lloyd Wright-designed gem that's been fully restored.
One last tip: The best spot to have your Dells wedding photos taken is along the RiverWalk in Downtown Wisconsin Dells with views to the majestic bluffs and meandering Wisconsin River. After all, Wisconsin Dells is also known for its "woods and water and rocks" scenic beauty and has been for generations. On the other hand, if you're more the carefree type, maybe a photo taken at the bottom of a waterslide would be the picture-perfect cover for your wedding album. No question, it would be memorable.
