Safety First

August 01, 2011

The Wisconsin Dells area police departments offer these safety tips for getting around town:

  1. This isn’t your typical traffic situation, with first-time visitors often slowing down to get their bearings and a look at all the sights. You should slow down too, leaving plenty of space between you and the car in front of you.
  2. Map out your day’s activities, finding ways to avoid crossing the flow of traffic whenever possible.
  3. Pedestrian traffic always has the right of way. Not all crosswalks are regulated by stop lights; some are marked. Take your time, watch out for children, and don’t pass a stopped car on the right.
  4. Pedestrians should cross only at the crosswalks and walk only on the sidewalks. Sidewalks run from one end of the community to the other.
  5. Bicyclists are allowed to ride their bikes on the sidewalks everywhere but downtown, so watch for bicyclists whether you’re on foot or driving a car. In the downtown area, more specifically on Broadway, bicyclists are to use the designated bike lanes so keep an eye out for them in those lanes.
  6. The community has put in several roundabouts, so get familiar with the ins and outs of navigating a roundabout before you arrive.
  7. Wisconsin Dells is home to many bodies of water including the Wisconsin River. Visitors should be alert to strong currents. This is important for both boaters and swimmers and is not something to be taken lightly.
