When the Wisconsin Dells car show known as Automotion debuted back in 1986, it was all about families coming together over a shared love of classic rides. It’s still that way today, with two and three generations bonding over the hard work that goes into each beautiful restoration.
It’s easy to be entranced by all that chrome. But look beyond the 1,200 or so classic cars and trucks on display at the 2018 Automotion event, May 19-20 at Noah’s Ark Waterpark parking lot, and what you’ll see are parents, grandparents and children standing side-by-side and smiling ear to ear, so proud of what they’ve accomplished together.
Automotion got its start in 1986, with cars lining up around a few blocks in downtown Dells, a more informal gathering of car enthusiasts and their families. Today, the event spans acres with activities running over two days, and yet the family vibe and the incredible restorations remain the important constants.
From young children to those whose first car is the one on display, there’s such a warmth to the bonding over these vehicles. Reminiscing can be heard throughout the grounds. Compliments abound. Advice and insider tips are freely given.
Because this event is so multi-generational in nature, there are lots of kids’ activities, family entertainment, food and photo opportunities to keep everyone smiling. Speaking of photo opps, the “Hollywood on Broadway” on Saturday night, located off-site downtown on Broadway, gives event-goers a chance to photograph “stars of steel,” namely replicas of iconic Hollywood cars, including Ghostbusters and Back to the Future. The Sunday awards presentation is the culmination of hours happily spent perfecting every last detail of a restoration.
Admission is free for spectators. So go ahead, bring the whole family. You’ll feel right at home!
