The Paul Bunyan Connection

Paul Bunyan Connection

One of the rituals in Wisconsin Dells is to eat at Paul Bunyan’s Northwoods Cook Shanty. This place is iconic – nearly 60 years in business, four generations of family ownership, hearty family-style meals, and homemade buttermilk donuts made fresh every day! The doors here open at 7 a.m. for breakfast, although the bakers are hard at work by 5 a.m. to make the batter for the donuts. Breakfast is served lumberjack-style and it’s all-you-can-eat with pancakes, sausage, eggs, camp-fried potatoes, biscuits and gravy, and donuts.

For lunch, try the Lumberjack Platter, with two meat entrées, potato, veggie, homemade coleslaw and homemade lumberjack bread. For dinner, the all-you-can-eat lumberjack dinners that start with camp-style chicken and end with a torte-style cake for dessert are pure deliciousness.

Stay for the Dells Lumberjack Show right next door where you’ll see world-class athletes compete in the axe throw, spring board chop, obstacle pole, log roll and more. The show pays homage to the lumbering industry in the state which dates back to the 1830s.

One last suggestion: Get a photo in front of the huge fiberglass statue of Paul Bunyan that stands tall in front of the restaurant or Babe the Blue Ox at the entrance to the lumberjack show.
