Keeping Score At Golf

Natural Landscapes Naturally Challenging

Just as the waterpark craze was a stroke of genius, some business owners decided the Dells could be a golf mecca too. And they were right. The topography of the area makes for some great natural landscape courses, and big name designers have brought this community real credibility when it comes to the game of golf. Cold Water Canyon Golf Course at Chula Vista Resort features 18 holes, with the front nine played along canyons and the back nine a Scottish links-style. Trappers Turn Golf Club, a 27-hole course that earned four-and-a-half stars in Golf Digest’s “Best Places to Play,” was designed by two-time U.S. Open Champion Andy North and world renowned golf course designer Roger Packard. The 18-hole Wild Rock Golf Club at the Wilderness, the second golf course at the Wilderness Resort, which also operates The Woods Executive Course at the Wilderness, was designed by the duo of Dr. Mike Hurdzan and Dana Fry. It actually curves around and through the site of a former quarry, making for some dramatic and challenging holes.

Mini-Golf Gets Competitive

Not everyone has a golf handicap worth envying. And that’s precisely why miniature golf is so perfect -- it wipes away any advantage golfers who excel on the full-size greens might have. Not surprising, it also gets the competitive juices flowing. Just walk the courses located in downtown Wisconsin Dells and you’re sure to overhear a remark or two regarding accurate scorekeeping. There’s Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf, where the “grounds crew” maintains 30,000 plants around 90 holes. Next door at Timber Falls Adventure Park, visitors can golf around a volcano that erupts every 15 minutes or head across the street to their links along the Wisconsin River, the only course with shade.
