2013-07-19My husband and daughter and I went for a horseback ride on their beautiful trail. As soon as we arrived I explained that my nine-year-old daughter is blind, and we were made to feel that was not a concern at all. I have to say this was quite a different experience than we've had at other places in the past. Our guide was Autumn, she rode in front of my daughter and kept us all entertained with explanations of what we were passing by and hearing, and telling us about our horses' personalities. It was an absolutely excellent experience! I highly recommend this ranch, it is definitely worth the short trip outside of the Dells! Prices were very reasonable, horses were well cared for and the staff was amazing.
2011-09-05We made a weekend trip to visit family. After attending a function, we decided to go Horseback riding. We had a group of 11, and almost half of us were first-timers or beginners. They were very accomodating to our group, were friendly and courteous. Our guide was fantastic! We will most certainly be back!
2010-08-24After reseaching riding stables in the area I chose Red Ranch and am so glad that I did! The ranch was really nice and the horses were in great shape. They looked well fed and rested. They even still had one of their original horses that they estimated to be about 30 years old! The horses well being was my main concern in choosing a stable. The trail guide was wonderful with my two boys ages 6 and 10. This was their first ride and they loved it! She was very watchful of them. Before and after the ride they were able to feed treats to all of the horses and were able to really get to know them. Our trail guide even took the time to take us back to their stall after the ride so I could get more pictures. Great great place and will def be back!
2008-07-24My best friend took me riding here since I havent ridden in years. I loved it, walking, trotting and cantering. The guide was super nice and friendly, and always made sure we were comfortable with the pace. The horses were extremely friendly and responsive, and I was never scared or nervous like I had been before at other stables .

How Will You Wile Away The Winter In Wisconsin Dells?2010-11-03Whatever you do this winter, don’t stay cooped up at home. Embrace the frosty season. Celebrate the snowfalls. Ice those feelings of cabin fever. It’s Wisconsin Dells to the rescue.Read More
How Will You Wile Away The Winter In Wisconsin Dells?

Wisconsin Dells Winter ActivitiesWhatever you do this winter, don’t stay cooped up at home.  Embrace the frosty season.  Celebrate the snowfalls.  Ice those feelings of cabin fever.  It’s the Dells to the rescue.

Admitting bias, we think there’s nothing quite as lovely as indoor Wisconsin Dells water parks in the dead of winter.  Picture this:  You and your family basking in 80 degree temperatures, perhaps at your own private poolside cabana, deciding which ride to do next - a water roller coaster, racing slides or perhaps an indoor surf machine.

Snowboarding Cascade MountainNo less remarkable is the job Mother Nature does in dumping enough fluffy flakes in the Dells to make downhill skiing and snow tubing an extremely fun option.  Just as Wisconsin Dells pioneered the indoor waterpark, area business owners have done a stellar job translating the water slide for winter outdoor enthusiasts.  At Cascade Mountain Ski, Snowboard & Snow Tube, they have five 800-foot long snow tube chutes along with 36 downhill trails (hint: take the high speed Mountain Top Express lift to pack in more fun per minute).

Wisconsin Dells HockeyIf you like to glide through the season, take advantage of open skate times Wednesdays and Sundays at the Poppy Waterman Ice Arena.  Outside rinks include the one at Bowman Park in Downtown Wisconsin Dells and on beautiful Lake Delton.

WI Dells Indoor Winter ActivitiesMany Wisconsin Dells attractions are open year-round, so peel off some time to bowl at Knuckleheads Bowling & Indoor Amusement Park or the Kalahari Indoor Theme Park at the Kalahari Waterpark Resort Convention Center, play a wizard quest-style full-size labyrinth game at MagiQuest or Wizard Quest in downtown Dells, explore at the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory – Interactive Science Center or go horseback riding through the snow at Red Ridge Ranch Riding Stable.

What’s that you say, you love winter more with every passing minute?  Good, very good.

Try it in a sentence like "I can't wait to spend our first morning in Wisconsin Dells schussing down the ski slopes and then I'll trade my snowsuit for a swim suit and splash the afternoon away at an indoor water park."Read More

ShowboatGhost Stories That Get You Thinking

Here's a disclaimer: Don't read this if the idea of poltergeist makes you uneasy. O.K., with that out of the way, let's take a little tour of places in Wisconsin Dells that are purported to be haunted. First, there's the historic Showboat Saloon, a 100-year-old wedge-shaped building located at 24 Broadway in downtown Wisconsin Dells. It's long been regarded as haunted by a past resident – her name is Molly – and she favors the upstairs kitchen, opening and closing doors and fiddling with appliances. Her appearances became so regular that the current owner no longer allows people to rent out the upstairs apartment. The bar area has apparently been the scene of some supernatural activity too, with stories of human forms in turn-of-the-century clothing materializing in mirrors. Some say a strange voice has been heard numerous times near the stage area. In the cellar, unusual cold spots are apparent and employees have been known to experience feelings of nausea and sudden anxiety in this area.

Others in the community say the ghost of lumber rafter turned riverboat captain Leroy Gates haunts the waters of the Wisconsin River. Gates was one of the first entrepreneurs to see the potential in sightseeing tours for the area and in 1856 he took out an ad declaring he had purchased a boat for the purpose of touring occult caves of the Dells. Gates met his death on September 8, 1895, but his apparition apparently didn't get the memo.

Then there's Belle Boyd, famous Confederate spy who spent her final days in Wisconsin Dells. As the story goes, Boyd, who hailed from Virginia, aided Confederate generals using her flirtatious charms to get information from a Union general's aide. At the end of the war, she traveled the country to present dramatic narratives of her spying adventures. On June 9, 1900, she arrived in Wisconsin Dells to give a speech to veterans of the Union Army. Two days later, at the age of 56, she suffered a fatal heart attack. Her gravesite in the Wisconsin Dells Spring Hill Cemetery was completed with stones from each of the Confederate states. Some claim her ghost wanders the paths of the cemetery yet today.

    TombstoneFrighteningly Good Times

If all that ghost talk gives you the heebie-jeebies, perhaps you'd have more fun exploring manmade attractions dedicated to scaring visitors. The Ghost Out-Post Haunted House has more than a dozen bone-chilling animatronics-filled chambers. It's open daily through the end of October, then on the weekends after that. Note – this attraction is not intended for little ones afraid of the dark.

The Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort sure knows how to celebrate Halloween! The whole month of October is filled with family friendly activities such as wagon rides, trick or treat trail and Ken-Ducky Derby Halloween Duck Races. Don't miss their Family Halloween Costume Party on October 31st, featuring a costume contest with prizes for all winners.

The October calendar looks eerily appealing too at many of the Wisconsin Dells Waterpark Resorts. Throughout the month there are various haunting activities such as hayrides, mazes, trick or treating and more.

One other not-to-be-missed attraction is the vampire exhibit at Ripley's Believe It or Not! Museum. Look for the secret passageway and also allot time to bone up on your vampire trivia while you're there.

Ghost BoatGhost Tours by Land and by Sea

The Ghost Boat Tours of the Wisconsin River take passengers on an eerie after-dark excursion to Witches Gulch. Boats depart from the Dells Boat Tours® main dock at 11 Broadway in Downtown Dells, where even the historic ticket building will be decked out for Halloween. Upon arriving at Witches Gulch, passengers will disembark and snake along a narrow boardwalk leading deep into the darkened gorge. This after-dark tour, which runs Friday and Saturday evenings through Halloween weekend, is not recommended for children under the age of 11. Reservations are required and can be made by calling Dells Boat Tours® at (608) 254-8555.

Hayrides and Mazes and Zip Lines, Oh My

Less than a half hour from Wisconsin Dells in nearby Mauston, Red Ridge Ranch will have haunted hayrides and a haunted corn maze Friday and Saturday nights from dusk to 10 p.m. through the end of October. Weekday activities are a little less scary and include pumpkin painting and a petting zoo.

If you like zip lining during the day, you’ll be screaming with delight knowing you can now zip by the light of the moon at the Moonlight Canyon Zip Line Tour at the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort. The tour spans six towers, with the longest run 907 feet. You'll be 55 feet above the floor of Lost Canyon. Tours continue through the fall, weather permitting. Advanced reservations are required at (800) 867-9453. Whee!

Looking to get lost in a corn maze? Stop by Chula Vista Resort’s 7-acre cornfield. It’s open (weather permitting) Friday - Sunday. In October, the corn maze features zombie events. Attendees are encouraged to dress up in their best zombie costume. Chula Vista also has a GPS and trivia game app for smartphones. Download it, and you will be given clues that help guide you through the maze. Isn’t that nifty?

Happy Holidays from Wisconsin Dells2012-08-16If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’ve been to Wisconsin Dells at least once and an equally good chance that trip was for a summer vacation. Time to broaden your horizons. The community, known affectionately at “The Waterpark Capital of the World!®”, also wants to be known as a four-season destination and they’ve earned that.Read More
    Happy Holidays from Wisconsin Dells

WinterWhen you’re known far and wide for your wildly fun waterparks and classic attractions, you can’t back off just because it turns cold. After all, it’s Wisconsin where winter makes up a big chunk of the calendar, so why not kick it off big with the holidays and then continue strong all the way through to spring thaw?

For winter lodging, you can’t go wrong with a big cabin, like those on the grounds of the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort, or a vacation home rental from Sand County Service Company. They just feel, well, Christmas-y. New Year’s Eve bashes are hosted from one end of town to the other. Choose a cozy party or an all-out countdown celebration, whatever suits your fancy.

But that only takes us up to January 1 and there’s a lot of winter left to fill.

Consider a cure-cabin-fever getaway to a weather-proof indoor waterpark resort - the community has plenty to choose from. There's something so satisfying about swimming indoors in 80+ degree temperatures when there's snow falling outside. A mid-winter getaway would be a good time to test out the new waterslides at the Kalahari Resort. Or perhaps you could set a goal of riding every waterslide within Mt. Olympus' indoor waterpark.

If you prefer not to get wet, there are other indoor adventures to consider, like rock climbing, ropes courses, laser tag, mini-golfing and go-karting, to name a few.

A little fresh air is a good thing too, as in tubing, boarding or skiing at Cascade Mountain Ski, Snowboard & Snow Tube or Christmas Mountain Ski, or how about a little ice skating on Lake Delton. The area has lots of snowmobile trails as well. Outdoor outfitter Chimney Rock Park Zip Line Tour - Vertical Illusions will take you on a frozen waterfall climb to experience the beauty of the area like you've never see before. Snow shoeing and cross country skiing are other options for taking in the natural wonders of Wisconsin Dells in the winter.

Red Ridge Ranch Riding Stable is open year-round, so maybe you'd like to opt for a trail ride through their 250 acres of rolling farmland and wooded hills. Ask about their sleigh rides too. Same suggestions goes for Canyon Creek Riding Stables, where riders enjoy a guided tour with an old west theme.

There are plenty of things to do in Wisconsin during the winter. Those winter months will whiz by.
