How the Dells Came to Be the Spring Break Capital of the Midwest

February 01, 2020

Looking for a wholesome place to take your toddlers, tweens and teens for Spring Break that doesn’t require airfare? Then Wisconsin Dells is your ticket to family fun, with the community’s unofficial status as “Spring Break Capital of the Midwest” well deserved.

Break Out of February Doldrums

For those of you reading this who reside in Illinois, this story is especially for you, given school spring breaks fall in February this year for many of you. For others in the Midwest, you have a bit more planning time, but best to jump on it now. We’re talking a spring break getaway for the family that provides a break for the parents and a whopping good time for the kids.

Let’s start with the magic words, “The Waterpark Capital of the World!®” There are indoor waterparks aplenty, from those at the largest resorts to toddler-friendly options at mid-size resorts. A particular favorite among winter visitors is the Wild Waterdome at the Wilderness Resort, America’s largest waterpark resort. This 70,000 square-foot waterpark has a see-through roof that bathes the entire place in natural sunlight, so bring the suntan lotion. The showstopping feature here is the country’s largest indoor wave pool. There are even palm and banana trees growing inside this waterpark masterpiece. Other indoor waterparks making the Top 5 list based on size and variety of waterslides include Kalahari Resort & Conventions, Great Wolf Lodge, Chula Vista Resort, and Mt. Olympus Resort. Insider tip: Head to the resort that pioneered the indoor waterpark craze, the Polynesian Water Park Resort.

Parents, when you’re ready to dry off, coax the kids out of the water with the promise of indoor amusement parks. They can jump around at the trampoline park at Knuckleheads Trampoline Park*Rides*Bowling and then bowl a few frames after all that bouncing around; they’ll be amazed at the indoor go-karts, whirly rides and zip lines at Tom Foolerys Adventure Park; and they can participate in a little friendly family competition at Wild Fun Zone with its laser tag arena and black light mini-golf course.

Yes, but there are deals, you ask. Of course there are! Just click here to access the Deals page on and you'll find offers for dining, lodging and things to do. How nice is it that you don't have to pay for airfare to have a spring break of epic proportions!
