2013-08-14I loved this place! I picked it for our mini family vacation because there were a total of 14 of us and we were able to all stay together in one of their condo combo units. It was clean, spacious and the beds were super comfy. The location was great. It felt very private while still being close to everything. The best thing was that there weren't hundreds of kids running around everywhere like at the waterpark resorts. We had a 4, 5 and 6 year old and they were perfectly happy with the pool and slides. Everyone in our group enjoyed staying here. The only complaint I got from anyone was that there was no elevator in the condo building. I didn't think it was a big deal as it's only 2 floors, but it could be an issue for seniors or the handicapped. I do believe there is an elevator in the main building, though. I would definitely recommend this resort to anyone looking for a clean, comfy place to relax. Next time, I'll be staying longer to enjoy the beach a bit more.
2012-10-12We enjoyed our stay at the resort very much. We were able to bring our 100 pound dog with us for a small charge by the resort. The room was very clean and also were the grounds. A place to stay while in the Dells for vacation. They have a wonderful view of Lake Delton from your room. There is plenty to do for young and old.

2009-08-03We absolutely loved our stay! Wonderful staff. The security guard even helped get the pack & play for our 2 year old! We will be back. Thank you for the pleasant stay for our family of four!
2009-07-08We chose "Sunset Bay" from the Wisconsin Dells vacation guide and it was just perfect. So much so that we went back 15 years in a row. We would book our cabin for the following year before we left and arrange with other families that we had made friends with to come back on the same week each year. The amenities were great and it had everything we wanted in a vacation resort. The kids are grown now and they still go and my wife and I go up for the "Fall Festival. We just can't say enough about the place!

Reunion Planner Calendar

You know how difficult it can be to get your immediate family together for a holiday dinner?  Now imagine getting multiple families and multiple generations from multiple states to meet up the same week every year in Wisconsin Dells.  Pat Wallace from suburban Chicago and his childhood friend Terry Monaghan started the tradition of getting their two broods together for an annual Wisconsin Dells family reunion some 30 years ago.

One year, 85 people showed up, but the number usually hovers around 60. Recently, like the more than nine summers before that, the group chose Baker’s Sunset Bay Resort as their gathering spot.  Relatives came from as far away as Maryland and Missouri.  Four generations were represented, ranging in age from one month to 67 years.  Most stay for a full week, no small feat in itself, with the kids experiencing the thrill of getting up on water skis for the first time and the adults spending quality time reminiscing.  On the warm summer day we visited, the pool was full of little ones splashing around with grandparents, with a competitive sand volleyball match going on nearby.

Even before the week was up, the group had booked their rooms for the following year.  Wallace and Monaghan joked that some of the kids have included a mention of the family reunion in their wedding vows so new members of the clan know their presence will be requested every July in the Dells.  Now that’s good planning.

Great Anticipation - The Remaking of Lake Delton2009-04-01Remaking A Lake - Everyone wondered, would Lake Delton be back after draining into the Wisconsin River in 2008 following torrential rains. It's back!Read More
Great Anticipation - The Remaking of Lake Delton

Empty Lake Delton WisconsinThere may be no one more eager to christen the lake "open for business" than Tom Diehl, owner of the Tommy Bartlett Show. Ask any of the Dells locals, and they'll tell you it was Diehl who was hardest hit when the lake drained, stranding his water ski show and lopping off nearly all his seasonal income in one fell swoop. Yet, through the hardship, it was also Diehl who volunteered tirelessly on behalf of the entire Village of Lake Delton, while shying away from any accolades for his work, to make certain the mammoth task of remaking the lake would happen in less than a year's time. The Tommy Bartlett Show is making a comeback this summer, which is just what you'd expect from Diehl.

"The lake being back for the summer of 2009 is a tremendous boost to all the affected businesses. I'm deeply grateful to all those who worked so hard to ensure the lake's return."

Then there's Dawn Baker, co-owner of Baker's Sunset Bay Resort, a spot so popular for Wisconsin Dells family reunions and return guests that it's like old home week there every day of the summer. On the infamous day, Baker stood in disbelief, watching the waters pull away from her beach. She was interviewed often by reporters wanting to get her first-hand perspective. Today, she's happy to provide it.

“We felt like we had lost our best friend when we lost the lake. It's exciting to see our old friend again."

Lake Delton Refilled - 2009

General Manager at Original Wisconsin Ducks®, Dan Gavinski, had to reroute their land-to-water tours last summer, bypassing the lake and spending more time on the Wisconsin River. This summer, the Duck tour will once again include the famous splashdown in Lake Delton.

"It brought a smile to all of our faces when the repair work was completed and the lake began to refill. Our passengers will get a real treat when they see the new lake up close on our amphibious tours."

Finally, Joe Eck, marketing director for the Wilderness on the Lake resort. In a nice turnabout, the Wisconsin Dells resort extended an invitation to any guest who had been there on that fateful June 9 to return this year on the same day, compliments of the resort.

"We want all of our guests to be awed at what a difference a year makes."

Wisconsin Dells business owners classify themselves as fierce but friendly competitors, yet this event rallied the community together like never before and brought out the best in everyone. And that was the silver lining to one very large storm cloud.

A Classic Influence Every Step Of The Way

Prefer The Wisconsin Dells Classics

Enduring. Endearing. Those were the two words that guided the research for this story on the classic Wisconsin Dells vacation. Many of the Wisconsin Dells hotels, attractions and restaurants included below have been building up a fan base for decades and across generations. Others are slightly more contemporary classics that still say “Wisconsin Dells” in a big way. Combined, they make for lots of choices for travelers who like to go classic.

A good starting point is downtown, where classic Wisconsin Dells hotel and motels right on the main street are well maintained and still very popular. There’s Fitzgerald’s Motel, where the front sign reminds you to “Smile, you’re on vacation.” Last year, Fitzgerald’s celebrated its 60th anniversary, and owner Margaret Gewont is 100% sincere when she tells you guests are more like extended family than vacationers. A peek in the guest book proves it, with the first entry reading: “Margaret is the ultimate hostess.” The list of downtown Wisconsin Dells hotels and motels is long and varied, so take your pick.

As long as you’re already on the main thoroughfare, keep your car parked and put on your walking shoes for a stroll up and down Broadway. You’ll pass fudge shops like Swiss Maid Fudge and Wisconsin Dairyland Fudge and likely succumb to the sweets being made behind the picture windows. Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum, with its quirky and fun-to-read-about displays from adventures of days gone by, is one of the many amusing Wisconsin Dells attractions on Broadway. As long as you’re downtown, go ahead and have one of those old-timey pictures taken. For souvenirs, Bailey’s Landing and Winnebago Gift Shop are both known for their wide selection of Minnetonka moccasins, a fashion statement in Wisconsin and on the runways of New York.

On your walk through the Dells, you’re sure to see a Duck or two. Not the feathered kind, but the WWII amphibious vehicle kind that takes visitors on tours of Lake Delton and the Wisconsin River. Hop on and enjoy the splashdowns and scenery. Another classic river tour choice is a tour boat, either double decker or paddlewheeler. Some even offer shore landings, which is really the best way to experience the grandeur of the sandstone bluffs in the area.

Now on to real animals, as in the deer at Wisconsin Deer Park, one of the classic Wisconsin Dells attractions that’s been in business for more than 50 years. Here you can feed the deer and also interact with American elk and bison. Wisconsin Deer Park also acts as a zoological supply service, with deer from their park being placed in zoos all over the country.

tommy-bartlett-show-100Tommy Bartlett Classic Attractions

Two Wisconsin Dells attractions that begin with the founder’s name, Tommy Bartlett, are staples on the classic vacation itinerary. There’s the famous Tommy Bartlett Show staged on Lake Delton, the longest running water ski show of its kind in the country. It's replete with complicated ski tricks, fast boats, comedy and acrobatic acts thrown in for good measure. Plus, the Tommy Bartlett Exploratory - Interactive Science Center is also known for its hundreds of hands-on science experiments, a real Russian MIR space station and an exact replica of NASA’s Mercury space capsule.

noahs-ark-water-park-100Noah's Ark Waterpark - A Classic Wisconsin Dells Water Park

If you want to experience a classic Dells water park, then Noah’s Ark Waterpark is it. It opened in 1979 and is the largest outdoor water park in the country, adding something new nearly every year.

More Wisconsin Dells Classics

There are a number of other classic finds worthy of their own mention. In lodging, Dell Creek Motel, with its pretty courtyard gardens, has some of the best curb appeal in the community. On Lake Delton, there’s Baker’s Sunset Bay Resort, a fun place for family reunions. For shopping, Aunt Jenny’s Got-It-All Store is a third-generation Dells’ family business which prides itself on its fun selection of apparel, souvenirs, moccasins, jewelry and toys. For breakfast, try Mr. Pancake with 30 varieties of pancakes and waffles; Paul Bunyan’s Northwoods Cook Shanty with scrumptious donuts; or Howie’s Restaurant, home of Howie’s self-proclaimed “Huge Breakfast” and, if you’re really hungry, his “Super Breakfast.”

wisconsin-supper-clubs-100Classic Wisconsin Supper Clubs

The classic Wisconsin supper clubs in the area deserve a paragraph of their own. If you’re wondering what the requirements are for supper club designation, here goes: clubby bar in which to enjoy that Wisconsin cocktail favorite, the brandy old fashioned, before you sit down to your meal; well trained staff who see to your every need and never rush you; crisp table linens; interesting architecture; relish trays and fresh baked rolls, standout wine cellar; and steaks, seafood and chops that are remarkable. If that sounds mouthwatering to you, then consider one special dinner out at the Del-Bar, Field’s at the Wilderness, House of Embers, Ishnala Supper Club, or the newest entry in the genre of classic supper clubs, Kaminski Bros. Chop House at Chula Vista Resort.

Drive-In Movies In The Dells

For one last flash from the past in the Dells, the drive-in movie.  Big Sky Twin Drive-In Theater shows double features of first-run movies on two screens every night during the summer. Its concession stand is kitschy and comfortably cramped, serving everything you’d want from a classic snack bar. Side note, if you stay at Holiday Shores Camp-Resort or the Wilderness Hotel & Golf Resort, ask about their seasonal outdoor movies too, shown right on the grounds.

That’s it, the classic Wisconsin Dells getaway, filled with sweet memories to last until the next time you visit.

Pet-Friendly Wisconsin Dells2010-10-22Have pet, will travel. Wouldn't think of vacationing without your pet? You're not alone.Read More
Pet-Friendly Wisconsin Dells

Are you the kind of pet owner who wouldn’t think of leaving your precious pug or precocious long-hair Persian at home while you’re on vacation in the Dells?  According to the Wisconsin Dells Visitor Bureau, you’re not alone.  The number of searches for pet-friendly options on the web site,, is through the roof, proving people do adore their four-legged friends.  So, if your vacation is only complete with pet in tow, consider these ideas when planning your next trip to the Dells.

Book A Stay On Lake Delton

At Delton Oaks Resort on Lake Delton, owner Kate Pettit says it’s not unusual for a dozen well-behaved furry animals, mostly dogs, to be vacationing in the Dells with their families at the Wisconsin Dells resort at any given time.  “We also have one rabbit who’s a regular and even checked in a baby parrot once who was being hand-fed,” shared Kate.  While guests are enjoying the camaraderie, pets are making friends too.  “Pets bring people together to meet and talk,” said Kate, “and the kids especially enjoy the animals.”  Baker’s Sunset Bay Resort on Lake Delton also welcomes pets.

Board Your Pet At Nice Digs

Wide open green space and a pretty patch of flowers greet guests of the Pet Retreat on the outskirts of Wisconsin Dells.  Owned by Sandi Jordan, this kennel provides lodging for dogs and cats while their families are staying at a Wisconsin Dells waterpark resort or another people-only property in the area.  There’s a large fenced-in area with kiddie pools-turned-pet pools and a grooming area too.  But the pièce de résistance for the well-heeled poodle has to be the 18 suites, complete with well-appointed bed and television.  “Our customers feel most comfortable leaving their pets close by and some even come to visit,” said Sandi.

Know A Vet Is Close By

Dells Animal Hospital is the go-to spot for emergency care in Wisconsin Dells.  The veterinarians and support staff are animal lovers and pride themselves on being able to work with lots of different “personalities,” of pets that is.

For more pet-friendly lodging options in Wisconsin Dells lodging options, and there are many, search under Places to Stay by using the criteria “pets permitted.”
